EKU Women & Gender Studies

EKU Women & Gender Studies Women & Gender Studies at Eastern Kentucky University offers a minor and a certificate.

EKU Women and Gender Studies (WGS) is an interdisciplinary program offering both a minor and a certificate in Women and Gender Studies. WGS acquaints students with the growing research on women, gender, and sexuality studies. WGS courses address the intersections of gender, race, class, sexuality, ability, religion, age, and veteran status and promote active learning and social engagement. In our

classes as well as in our events and student groups, we encourage students to analyze competing perspectives and to integrate knowledge across traditional academic boundaries. Students learn to identify and analyze gender-based assumptions and biases and to recognize their consequences on individual, social, and cultural levels.

Spring 2024 class offering: WGS/REL 365 with Dr. Hannah James, 4:30-5:45 TR.

➢ In this class, weʼll explore the relationship between religions in the United States and womenʼs, gender, and LGBTQIA+ issues. Weʼll study a wide range of spiritualities, including Indigenous traditions, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Wicca, and Spiritualism. Weʼll not only study critical historical events (and the often ignored stories of those women and other marginalized identities who played key roles in the development of the many different religions in the United States), but weʼll also explore and debate modern political and social issues.
➢ Some of the stories and themes weʼll explore together: The Salem Witch Trials; Early American Women Preachers; Womanist Theory; Marian Apparitions and Catholic Women; Seances and Spiritualism.
➢ Everyone is welcomed! Credit can be awarded as either WGS 365 or REL 365.
➢ Contact Dr. Hannah James ([email protected]) if youʼd like a copy of the syllabus to review!

Kentucky woman poet Ada Limón has won a MacArthur Grant!

Lexington Herald-leader, 10/3/23:
Ada Limón, the current U.S. Poet Laureate who set much of her lyrical work in her adopted home of Lexington, has a new award: “MacArthur Genius.”

Limón was named one of 20 MacArthur Foundation Fellows named Wednesday. Often called “Genuis Grants,” the prize comes with an $800,000 award for artists, writers, scientists, urban planners and other standouts to continue their work.

The foundation release said Limón was a poet “heightening our attention to the wonders of the natural world and our connections with one another. Across six books of poetry, she melds close observations with a direct tone that resonates powerfully with a wide readership. She constructs rhythmically intricate lines with pared-down, conversational language and approaches each new work as an opportunity to forge a confiding intimacy with her reader.”
