Earlham College Peace and Global Studies Program

Earlham College Peace and Global Studies Program Official page for the PAGS Office The PAGS Associate Office is a resource for faculty and students.

In the Peace and Global Studies (PAGS) Program at Earlham College, students explore strategies for constructing a just and peaceful world. The primary goal of the program is to develop students' competencies in fields contributing toward social transformation and peace. Some of these resources are: an archive of all theses by PAGS graduates since the beginning of the program; a extensive and ever-

expanding database with information for peace and justice related internships; opportunities for conferences, scholarships and peace initiatives; and an open space for student activism, among others. Our current projects range from expanding the theses database; updating and making our library more available to the general public; and creating an archive of student activism/campus controversies at Earlham. Dear PAGS Alumnae/i,

We're getting very excited for the upcoming celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of PAGS!

We have arranged for 3 of the events to be featured on Zoom, for those of you unable to attend in person, and you will find those 3 links below.

Because the Saturday afternoon Tree Dedication for Howard Richards is outside, we cannot feature that on Zoom, but both Earlham's AV Department and the Marketing & Communications team are working hard to try to stream at least portions of that. I'm also hoping that folks present will perhaps take some videos to share.

Can't wait to see you all, either in person or virtually!

Kind Regards,
Jo

Hello All!

Another reminder of the upcoming celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of PAGS, which will be held on Earlham's campus on Friday, Sept. 27 and Saturday, Sept. 28.

The event will kick off at 4 pm on Friday with a panel on Palestine. Basil Farraj (PAGS Class of 2014), professor at Birzeit University, will present a talk entitled "Global Palestine: Fortifying Our Collective Struggle against Oppression"; and Hashem Abu Sham'a (PAGS Class of 2017), professor at Oxford University, will present a talk entitled "A Map Without Guarantees: On Palestinian Imaginaries for Liberation."

We will have a dinner on Friday evening, in which Caroline Higgins will offer a keynote address.

Events on Saturday will include a networking gathering; a workshop devoted to energy restoration/healing for activists; a panel on activism/social action; a tree-planting in memory of Howard Richards, and an open mic on Saturday evening.

We still have 2-3 spots available on the activism panel, the theme of which might be broadened out to simply "What You Can Do With a PAGS Major." If you are interested in presenting, please let me know. We also have one other PAGS alum who is possibly interested in presenting scholarly work, and if we have a couple others who want to present scholarship, I could try to add one more panel discussion, although we already have a pretty packed schedule--so this might mean going conference-style and running a couple things simultaneously.

Stay tuned for an RSVP form for the Friday evening dinner, as well as a sign-up sheet for the Open Mic. We would love to hear your poetry, songs, and PAGS memories!

Please help spread the word, and also invite those stalwart Friends of PAGS who didn't major in PAGS but who've always been down with the cause!

Dear PAGS Alumnae/i and Friends of PAGS,

You are all invited back to Earlham's campus in late September for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the PAGS Program.

The event will kick off on the afternoon of Friday, September 27, with a panel on Palestine (scheduled for 4 pm), and will run through Saturday evening the 28th.

Other events will include: a dinner Friday evening; a networking event for alumni and current PAGS students; a tree planting in memory of Howard Richards; 1-2 more panel events on Saturday afternoon; and, of course, an open mic (or Breadbox for those of you of a certain age).

We will have special commemorations of Howard throughout our time together.

Please put this on your calendar and begin preparing your songs, poetry, stories to share, etc.

More details to come later, including a chance to RSVP for the Friday dinner.

Dear friends in PAGS:

It is with great sadness that I must share the news that Howard Richards passed away yesterday, April 7, 2024, at the age of 85. He had cancer but was still writing almost every day and was engaged in scholarly collaborations throughout all of his final years. Howard was one of the original founders of the Peace & Global Studies (PAGS) program, which will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary later this year.

We will all remember his intellect, his undying passion for justice and peace, his quirky sense of humor, the times that his courses such as Food Ethics and Philosophy of Social Science blew our minds and made us think completely differently, and the great love and care he showed for students over several generations. A longer remembrance of his life will be posted here in the near future. If anyone has remembrances to share, perhaps to be compiled into a booklet for the family, please email them to [email protected] and consider also posting here.

I share with you all one of his favorite songs, by one of his favorite artists. The lyrics say so much about what Howard brought to this world.
