VCU Opera

VCU Opera The VCU Opera Program; an extension of the Department of Music at Virginia Commonwealth University. WIGS? VCU Opera has over 200 of them (and 150 hairpieces).

VCU Opera has the longest-running tradition of annual full-scale opera productions in the state of Virginia –over 63 years! VCU Opera is an undergraduate only program - no relegation to the chorus while graduate students are cast in all the roles. Many students graduate with the invaluable experience of having performed two or three complete roles in full period costume with orchestra, sets and th

eatrical lighting - a rare opportunity for undergraduates. Such experience gives you a significant edge in when applying for a graduate degree or for competitions. At VCU Opera we cast you in appropriate roles for your level, in appropriate mainstream repertoire. We specialize in traditional productions (no 1960’s updates with thrift store costumes…) All of our productions utilize period costumes and wigs with attention to detail extending to shoe buckles, hair ornaments, jewelry, stage makeup, period movement..…. VCU Opera - where else will you find a COSTUME COLLECTION valued at $200,000 available exclusively for undergraduate use??? VCU Opera was chosen to be the recipient of this extraordinary collection donated from the Operafestival di Roma several years ago. Combined with our pre-existing costume collection we have a stunning selection that covers much of the basic repertory. VCU Opera has an enviable storage space. We’ve amassed an outstanding prop and scenery collection. Food and table settings for a banquet? The Dew Fairy’s blue bell? Which dagger do you want for Pamina? Which jewel box for the Countess? What style of bench? Fainting couch? Candlestick or chandelier? We’ve got it all stored next door to the rehearsal space. VOCAL COACHING -VCU is the only school in Virginia with a full-time vocal coach and a 2nd adjunct coach as well. In fact, it is unusual for any school in the US to have a full-time coach. Our voice students have the opportunity to coach beginning their sophomore year, enabling them to have a second weekly lesson on their voice repertoire, which promotes stylistic polish, dramatic, musical and linguistic growth at a faster pace. If enrolled in Opera Theatre you also receive weekly coaching outside of class time. VCU voice majors are provided a multitude of varied performance opportunities as a soloist throughout their undergraduate tenure: full opera roles; fully staged programs of scenes each Fall; masterclasses with visiting artists; recitals; solos with our choirs; and as soloists for churches. VCU Opera hosts numerous masterclasses presented by renowned professional artists. We also include workshops for technical theatre for the students as well as for acting, movement, audition techniques, stage makeup, stage combat etc. VCU Opera won 2nd place in the 2011 National Opera Association’s video competition for our very first submission---HANSEL & GRETEL! VCU Opera won 1st place in 2012 for “The Old Maid & the Thief” and VCU Opera was selected to perform/compete at the 2013 National Opera Association’s Convention - Scenes Competition and placed 3rd. VCU has a long track record of preparing students for outstanding success in graduate study and in the professional world. Our students regularly win large scholarships to the most highly regarded conservatories in the US due in large part to the performance opportunities they have had through VCU Opera and our excellent training program.

Wonder what some alumni are up to? Recent alum, Vanessa Nagdhi, performed this summer as a soloist in a concert sponsored by the Washington Women's Chorus at the Mansion at Strathmore. Over the summer she was cast as Diane Slawyer in the premiere of the new musical "Endangered," performed on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center. She placed 2nd in the American Prize/Opera Division for University Women, and was awarded a prize from The Friday Morning Music Club D.C. and a scholarship prize from The Shirley Rabb Winston Voice Competition. She is currently at Arizona State University, where she was awarded the top scholarship for incoming female graduate students. There, she has just finished up a production of Offenbach's Périchole as Guadalena. Congrats Vanessa!
