"Dr. David Hayes, Dept of Biological Sciences has been selected by EKU's Society of Foundation Professors as the 2026 winner of the John D. Rowlett Endowed Fund for Faculty Scholarship, Research, or Professional Development. Dr. Hayes's interdisciplinary research project, "Boone's Crawdads: The ancient history of stream-dwelling crayfish along the Wilderness Road," draws upon a diverse array of fields including genetics, geology, ecology, physics, and Kentucky settlement history. The project seeks to explain how the uplifted landscape of Kentucky shaped both the natural history of stream-dwelling animals, and draws parallels with pioneer expansion west of the Appalachians into Kentucky led by Daniel Boone. Dr. Hayes, who has been at EKU for 17 years, serves as curator EKU's Branson Museum of Zoology's Invertebrate Collection, which houses the largest collection of freshwater invertebrates in the Commonwealth and is one of the largest in the southeast. Dr. Hayes, in collaboration with various state agencies, enlists the help of students in classes and in independent research to help enhance the museum collection through field surveys and through generation of DNA barcode data to aid in species identification. Students in his classes gain valuable field and laboratory skills while, simultaneously generating data that is useful for research, conservation, and invasive species management."
