Join us for the second webinar in our series, The Legacy of 1776. Led by Ryan K. Smith of VCU Department of History, this session will explore “From Nature’s God” to “Divine Providence”: Faith and the Founding of the United States.

The discussion will examine the diversity of religious groups in the colonies, the beliefs of key founders and the documents that shaped both religious freedom and national identity.

NEW CLASS: Caribbean Rythms and Beats with Dr. Bernard Moitt

Music, music, sweet music! For many decades, the unique sounds of the Caribbean have resonated around the world due largely to the Roots Rock Reggae music of the LEGENDARY Jamaican singer, Bob Marley, who achieved superstardom status, and whose music is still adored globally.
***
Beyond reggae, this course will explore other genres of Caribbean music including Calypso, Soca Zouk, Beguine and Compa.

The West Central African origins of Caribbean music, including Highlife from Ghana, will provide historical context and underpinnings. The class will consist of weekly lectures and audio-visual and musical presentations that chart the evolution and development of Caribbean music from the seventeenth century to the present.

VCU College of Humanities and Sciences VA250 - American Revolution 250 Commission

The College of Humanities and Sciences is commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a new summer webinar series. Join faculty from the VCU Department of History as they explore Colonial America, the debates around independence, the founding ideals and tensions, and the story behind the Declaration itself.

We are kicking off this series next week with our first lecture by Sarah Hand Meacham, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of History. Dr. Meacham's talk, "Reluctant Revolutionaries: From Loyal Subjects to Fledgling Citizens", will be held next Monday, May 18 at 4pm.
