I am pleased to inform you that AFA has released its first open access textbook: Slavery to Liberation: The African American Experience. Edited by AFA faculty and published by EKU Libraries, this book has been uploaded to EKU Encompass platform. Here is the direct link: https://encompass.eku.edu/ekuopen/1/
Slavery to Liberation will be adopted by faculty teaching AFA 202 beginning this 2020 spring semester. The book will save our students approximately $9,000 dollars. I invite faculty teaching any aspect of the black experience to adopt some of the relevant chapters in their classes.
This book project started in 2016; it benefited from the blessing and support of Sara Ziegler, Dean of CLASS, Rose Perrine, Associate Dean of Class, and Betina Gardner, former Dean of Libraries; the undying commitment of EKU Librarians, Victoria Koger, Linda Sizemore, Kelly Smith, and Laura Edwards; and the exceptional leadership and dedication of Lisa Day, Joshua Farrington, Norman Powell, and Gwen Graham. I thank John Bowes for showing me great understanding and support as we finalized this project last fall.
Our chapter contributors brought their expertise to help our readers understand the diversity and richness of African America’s histories, peoples, and cultures-- and they are affiliated with higher education institutions around the globe, including EKU, Ball State University, San Francisco State University, Leiden University, Virginia State University, Georgetown University, the University of Oklahoma, DePauw University, and the University of Texas at Arlington.
