Long before television talk shows and YouTube cooking video, Jessie Marie DeBoth, Class of 1915, was a household name across the United States and Canada as a cooking star and home economist. She majored in English and later moved to Chicago where her column "Jessie's Notebook" was published in the Daily Tribune and widely syndicated. The column led to a series of four-day instructional courses — The DeBoth Homemakers Schools. DeBoth shared lectures and demonstrations about nutrition, food prep, menu planning, budgeting, interior design and cleaning and laundry tips. Jessie's Notebook evolved to a radio program in the 1940s and a TV show in the 1950s.

Leone Oyster graduated from Ripon College in 1919 and returned to her alma mater to teach chemistry for 32 years.

According to Ripon historian George Miller, Oyster “was cheerful and upbeat, expressed herself well and had a great sense of humor. She was known to have especially enjoyed teaching freshmen. She usually found them ‘scared to death of science,’ but looked forward to taking the mystery out of organic chemistry by making a tough subject fun and presenting solid principles students could grasp.”

Miller added that Oyster was “quite an athletic woman.” She was active with tennis, swimming, skiing and ice skating much of her life. She was, however, “constantly falling and breaking bones” during activities like tobogganing on Merriman Hill. “If the sled went shooting off, in just a few days she’d be back on crutches teaching her class,” said Miller.

Oyster received Ripon’s Distinguished Alumni Citation in 1969, and the Medal of Merit posthumously in 1983. A memorial scholarship and prize in her name is given to a chemistry student each year.
