In honor of Women's History Month, we would like to honor Grace Pilgrim Bloom who earned her master of science teaching degree (English) at UWRF in 1972 at the age of 86. She received her B.A. degree in American history and a minor in English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1908 and taught school in Osceola, Wisconsin until 1912 when she married Olof Bloom, owner and publisher of the Osceola and New Richmond weekly newspapers. During her married life she was the country editor of the newspapers in addition to running the home and raising two children. At the age of 82 she started to realize her dream, her heart's desire, of working on her master's degree in English. After receiving her master's degree, she taught a three-week summer course in 1974 on early English writers at Edge Hill College of Education in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England. Returning from overseas, it was her desire to find a graduate school to earn a Ph.D. degree but it did not materialize. Grace died September 6, 1976.

Her legacy lives on through the Grace Pilgrim Bloom Scholarship for English majors attending UWRF. May Grace's love of learning inspire all of us no matter our age.

Look round and round upon this bare bleak plain, and see even here, upon a winter's day, how beautiful the shadows are! Alas! It is the nature of their kind to be so. The loveliest things in life... are but shadows; and they come and go, and change and fade away, as rapidly as these.

Charles Dickens (1867). “The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit”.
