Super fun day today! 10 students accompanied members of our faculty to the 2025 Wisconsin Sociological Association’s annual meetings at UW-Stout. Students got to present their work and learn about some cool sociology going on in Wisconsin.

Last week the SCA department hosted a panel of alumni from the 2016 cohort to come out and talk to our current students about their experiences in our program and how they are using their degree. It was super cool to see how far they have all come in less than 10 years from graduation. Then we got to hang out at Juniors after their talk (pictured).

We are so proud of our student Em Murray (Sociology/Criminology major) who was one of 9 students across the university to receive a 2025 UWRF Chancellors Award for Students today. The award is given annually to students who are nominated for their exceptional success and leadership inside the classroom, within the university, and in the community. It is one of the highest honors a student can receive at UWRF. Here she is pictured with Dr. Withers, Dr. Miller, and Dr. Wiesen-Martin.

A huge shout out to Dr. Monica Liu from the University of St. Thomas. She visited with Dr. Withers’ morning Introduction to Sociology class and then spoke to the university about her new book “Seeking Western Men.” We love collaborating with other Sociologists! It was a great talk!

Big thanks to Marathon County Sherifs Office for coming out and talking about their experiences in law enforcement with Dr. Withers Intro to Sociology classes. We love our partnerships with agencies like them!

This past semester, Dr. Withers’ “Sociology of Race and Ethnicity” class took to the University Archives and Area Research Center at UWRF. They researched some of the history of racial and ethnic relations on our campus and built a display in the library. The class chose to highlight some of the interesting programming that had been put on by student organizations in the past to celebrate race and ethnicity on our campus.

Some of the seniors of our program presented their research last night at the UWRF URSCA Fall Galla. Congratulations to them on the successful presentations! It’s always fun to see how far these student come as they progress though our program.

What’s better than getting to play games in class! Pictured here is Dr. Paige Miller’s Introduction to Sociology class today while they played a revised version of Monopoly. The game is designed to have student engage with the US economic class structure. Fun times!

Last week this group and Dr. Paige Miller went to the Minnesota Government and Non-Profit career fair. And, it even came with some quick success... Criminology student Anthony Rohaley (pictured center right) is now being scouted by the Sioux Falls Police Department because of a contact he made at the event. Congrats to all who attended!

We are having a lot of fun today welcoming the new incoming cohort of Sociology, Criminology, and Anthropology students to our department. And, the plus was we got to see our chair (Paige Miller) do the “floss!”
