A new exhibit has landed at UCR Library!

To celebrate the centenary of Amazing Stories—the magazine that helped define science fiction as we know it today—Klein Librarian Phoenix Alexander curated a pop-up exhibit on the first floor of the Rivera Library that showcases nine landmark issues in the magazine’s history. The exhibit will be up until 04/26, and will be available to view online later in the year.

***Announcement for the SF community***

***UPDATED with newly-added collections listed at the bottom of this post ***

We’re delighted to announce the publication of the first of eleven boxes of newly-digitized photographs from the Jay Kay Klein Photographs and Papers, comprising almost 2,000 images of 47 conventions and events.

Once again, we welcome feedback from the community to assist with identifications in the photos. We have compiled a web page with guidance on commenting practices to ensure that your time and labor is respected, and that your feedback will be most helpful to us as we continue to review, add, and amend the descriptions of these images.

As science fiction fans and experts ourselves, we are of course familiar with the well-known figures of the genre that you’ll see in these collections—so if possible please avoid identifying figures such as Asimov, Heinlein, Pohl, and others of similar notoriety. Your feedback will be most valuable in identifying the lesser-known individuals in the photographs, in particular, fan attendees.

We’re honored to be able to make these wonderful snapshots of the SF community publicly accessible in the years to come, and thank you in advance for your patience and generosity!

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Klein Librarian, Phoenix Alexander, at [email protected].

We’re delighted to announce the acquisition of the Babylon 5 Film Sets Project archive, from photographer M. Robert Markovich, for the Eaton Collection.

The collection consists of 25 chromogenic color prints of photographs taken by Markovich showcasing sets used to film various productions related to the Babylon 5 science fiction franchise, and offer an extraordinary insight into the creation of science fiction television—complementing the scripts, production documents, and other film- and television-related materials in the Eaton.

All of the signed and numbered prints are 10x10 inches, with 15 printed on 11x14 paper and 10 matted in 16x20 vertical window cut mats.

M. Robert Markovich is a Southern Californian photographer, artist, and curator who has been creating, exhibiting, and publishing work since 1978. Markovich earned a Bachelors degree in Studio Art/Photography from the University of California, Riverside, and a Masters of Art degree in Studio Art from California State University, San Benardino.

We’re excited to share a new arrival at the Eaton Collection:

Weird Fantasy Vol. 1, No. 18.

One of the most remarkable pre-Code science fiction comic books of the 1950s, this issue is best known for its inclusion of ‘Judgement Day!’—a ground-breaking and progressive short story that directly confronted segregationist ideology at the height of the Jim Crow era.
