Distinguished professor Joe Kahne and Benjamin Bowyer, senior researcher with the UCR Civic Engagement Research Group, recently published a study in the journal Theory & Research in Social Education, based on surveys of more than 41,000 middle and high school students across 603 Chicago public school campuses.

They found that students became more engaged when teachers encourage them to investigate current societal issues and connect lessons to their own lives.

“These are the kinds of experiences that invite students to think, question, and connect,” Kahne said. “What’s striking is that when students learn about people like themselves, it doesn’t narrow their perspective — it actually expands their interest in people who hold different views.” Riverside County Office of Education

We're transforming STEM teaching through a National Science Foundation grant funding a new three-year project: Advancing Student Success in Postsecondary STEM through Embodied Learning.

Congratulations to SOE faculty Kinnari Atit and Cathy Lussier who will bring together faculty in mathematics, chemistry and physics to develop and study instructional approaches grounded in embodied learning. The goal? Help undergraduate students navigate foundational courses critical to future STEM careers.

🧩 Dr. Meltzoff is also director of the SEARCH Family Autism Center, on the UCR campus.

Through their autism screening clinic, community outreach activities, and online information, SEARCH is a resource for information, education, and research in the Inland Empire and throughout the state.

SEARCH is guided by the belief that every family deserves access to available resources, regardless of race, language, or socioeconomic status.
