Beneath the Colors is a contemporary hip-hop work that explores the realities of being Black in America. Created by Black people, hip-hop began as a space for joy, freedom, and self-expression, a place to be unapologetically yourself. Yet over time, it has been scrutinized, criticized, and labeled as “ghetto,” not because of the art itself, but because of the Black communities who created it.
This piece reflects that contradiction, examining how Black art and culture can be celebrated and consumed, while Black people themselves are often misunderstood, marginalized, and judged.
Beneath the Colors also speaks to a deeper truth: the idea that justice, liberty, and freedom are promised to all, yet are not equally accessible to Black people. Through movement, the work reveals what exists beneath those promises, the tension, the resilience, and the ongoing fight to be seen, heard, and treated as equal.
Unpledged is a solo work that examines Black identity within a nation that proclaims liberty and justice for all, yet repeatedly fails to extend those promises equally. Beneath the red, white, and blue lies both a history and a present reality of racism that continues to shape how Black people move through the world. This solo challenges the language of the Pledge of Allegiance by questioning who is truly included in its promises. It exposes how ideals such as equality, justice, and national belonging are selectively applied, leaving Black communities to navigate systems that criminalize, dismiss, and endanger them. The work asserts that understanding alone is not enough, and that discomfort is an unavoidable part of truth.
