OU’s ABA Autism Clinic currently has openings for new clients starting in Fall 2026 and Winter 2027!📝🤲

The clinic provides instruction in language development, peer interactions and daily-living skills for children between 2 and 15 years of age. It also collaborates with speech and occupational therapy to make sure the best gains are met for students.

E​arlier this month, the SEHS Resource Development Board came together to celebrate progress, share updates and recognize outstanding leadership in education. 📈

​During the meeting, the Resource Development Board — which helps advance the school’s mission through community engagement, advocacy and philanthropic work — honored Dr. Ron Roberts and Dr. Jim Schwarz, both SEHS alumni and board members, as they retire from their superintendent roles in Chippewa Valley Schools and the Avondale School District, respectively. 👏 Additional highlights included presentations from Dr. Audra Slocum, director of teacher education, on the impact of our Teacher Education programs, and Lynn Fisher, senior director of philanthropy, on recent accomplishments across SEHS.

Earlier this month, we welcomed Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) directors from across the state of Michigan for a special luncheon celebrating Oakland University’s first year as the statewide evaluator of Michigan’s GSRP. 🌟

The event provided an opportunity to recognize the partnership, dedication and shared commitment that make this important work possible. Together, we reflected on the accomplishments of the past year, discussed opportunities for continued growth and improvement, and celebrated the collective impact of supporting children and families throughout the state. 🤝

Last weekend, Oakland University hosted their 2026 Alumni Night of Excellence, honoring alumni achievements in business, community service, volunteerism and more, as well as our Young Alumni “10 Within 10” awardees! 🎊

This year, we were proud to honor the following distinguished alumni from the School of Education and Human Services:

🏆 Mary (SEHS ’65) and William Schwark (Oakland University School of Engineering and Computer Science ’64) — Community Engagement Award
🏆 Dr. Ashelin Currie (SEHS ’13) — Outstanding Alumni

Today, Gordon Food Service visited Pawley Hall to drop off their supply donation! 📦🦖

Gordon Food Service staff purchased items from Oakland University's Center for Autism (OUCARES)’s wishlist to be donated to our summer camps and the Hope Center. The donation is an annual event organized by the Ted Lindsay Foundation.

We have big news! 🏫🎊 Oakland University has been selected as the new evaluator for the Great Start Readiness Program, Michigan’s pre-K program for four-year-old children.

Dr. Tomoko Wakabayashi, professor of human development and child studies, and Dr. Noel Kelty, assistant professor of human development and child studies, were recently awarded funding through a competitive grant process to support the ongoing evaluation of children participating in GSRP. This contract, renewable for up to five years, will empower them to lead research efforts studying the effectiveness and impact of GSRP. 🖍️

“We really want to promote early childhood education as a more universal thing that all children will benefit from,” Wakabayashi said. “I think this universal pre-K is a great thing, and I hope more and more people will understand the importance of it — despite it being a large investment for Michigan — and the long-term impact for society.”

“We’re helping to shape, sustain and grow a strong early care and education system in our state,” Kelty said.

June is Innovation, Research and Discovery Month 💡

As artificial intelligence reshapes the future of higher education, one Oakland University alumnus is helping lead the way.

Dan Arnold, Ph.D., a three-time alumnus of the Oakland University School of Education and Human Services, has consistently demonstrated a commitment to advancing higher education through innovation, leadership and student-centered solutions. He earned his Master of Training and Development in 2010, a post-master's certificate in higher education in 2012 and a doctorate in educational leadership in 2015.

Currently serving as director of Support & Innovation for e-LIS and as Provost Fellow for Artificial Intelligence, Dr. Arnold is helping lead the university through one of the most transformative periods in higher education. In his role as Provost Fellow for AI, he is navigating the rapidly evolving AI landscape by researching emerging technologies, exploring ethical considerations in AI-augmented learning environments and identifying innovative ways AI can improve institutional operations and student success.

From addressing administrative inefficiencies to helping prepare graduates for a changing workforce, Dr. Arnold is at the forefront of ensuring the university remains innovative, responsive and future-focused. His leadership reflects the very spirit of Innovation, Research and Discovery, making him exceptionally deserving of this recognition.

Dr. Michael P. Chaney, professor in the Department of Counseling, has been elected to serve on the American Counseling Association’s (ACA) first-ever Board of Directors, an important honor that recognizes both his professional leadership and the historic nature of this transition within the counseling profession.💬🫂

As a member of the inaugural Board, Dr. Chaney will hold fiduciary responsibility for guiding the association’s strategic direction and overseeing its overall governance. The Board is charged with shaping and upholding ACA’s mission and vision while helping guide the future of both the association and the counseling profession. In his role, Dr. Chaney becomes part of the first group of professionals entrusted with leading the ACA under its new governance model, a historic distinction that will remain part of the association’s legacy.
