We were excited to sponsor and take part in last week’s Teaching and Learning Symposium, in collaboration with The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at OU.

This year’s theme was “Rekindling Connection Through Engagement, Belonging and Deep Learning” and brought together educators from Oakland University and beyond to explore how thoughtful assessment, active learning and meaningful uses of technology can spark curiosity, engagement and lasting growth. Attendees engaged in meaningful discussions, explored new teaching strategies and cultivated lasting professional connections with fellow educators.

The event included a keynote address from Dr. Claire Major regarding student engagement and sustaining one’s own energy, which was a highlight for many.

We can’t wait for next year’s symposium!

Congratulations to Dr. Katie Sloan, who was recently featured in a nationally covered news story!
Dr. Katie Sloan, assistant professor in the Department of Human Development and Child Studies, was recently interviewed by Bridge Michigan for a story on the state of Michigan’s new pilot program to test no-cost pre-K in home-based child care settings. The story was distributed by the Associated Press and has since been picked up by the Los Angeles Times — which reaches nearly 15 million readers — as well as CBS News, significantly expanding its reach and bringing Katie’s expertise to a nationwide audience.

In the article, Katie speaks to the importance of including home providers in the state’s efforts to make pre-K for all a reality.

“For some children, they benefit from being in a home-based setting where they’re not in a crowd of children and might have a lower ratio,” she said.

Thank you, Katie, for representing both OU and SEHS in the news!

Forging Futures: Ruthie
Ruthie Paulus, senior recruitment adviser for OU and two-time SEHS alumna, was recently profiled in the Oakland University Magazine to talk about her experiences as both a student and staff member.

Ruthie holds both a bachelor’s degree in human resource development (HRD) and a master’s in training in development from SEHS. In her interview, she speaks about how the HRD program helped her foster the potential in people and her passion for higher education. She credits much of her enthusiasm for HRD to Dr. David Strubler, professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership, who she calls “one of the most positive, kind and compassionate people I know.”

Ruthie has worked in the Undergraduate Admissions Office for nearly a decade, and says she is grateful for the opportunity to give back to the OU community in her current role.

“Having students and families arrive so anxious, and then being able to talk them through the process, assure them we have a good plan and watching their shoulders relax, and have them leave feeling good about their next steps … that is my favorite part,” she says. “I felt that so much throughout my own OU journey: that the people were genuine, they had my best interest in mind. And I want to do that for others.”

The full article about Ruthie is available to read on the OU website.
