I have been fortunate to have wonderful graduate assistants. I had the opportunity to work with Courtney during the peak of the pandemic Sept 2020 until April 2022. During that period we only met once in-person and that was for Courtney's graduation. Luckily we kept in touch, and were able to connect this summer. Higher Education has a gem and I wish her much success.

Alumni Spotlight – For the last month of this semester, we are happy to highlight Steven Bryant, our MAHEL Alumni since August of 2022. Steven is working as an Academic Adviser with the College of Arts and Sciences at Oakland University. He oversees more than 100 academic programs within the College, ranging from history to biology to theatre to criminal justice to secondary education programs and beyond! With a caseload of over 500 students, his day-to-day can vary and Steven thinks that is what is so enjoyable about this role. In Steven’s words, “You don't quite know what you are going to get, but it is very inspiring to meet with students who are driven. Driven to be lawyers and doctors, teachers, and designers, and more and more”. He helps students map out their timeline for graduation one year at a time and supports them when he can and when they need it. Wonderful work Steven. Keep it up!

For the current students,
“I guess some advice I would stress is how important networking is, as much as I don't want to agree with that as a concept. Networking in any industry is seemingly a necessary evil. The more people you talk with, the more your name gets out there and people hear about you. During my internship, I tried to take advantage of attending events on campus and meetings with offices that may not have had a direct impact on my internship just so I could have the experience and meet with new people. In doing so, I met my current Assistant Director who was on the hiring committee back in June of 2022 when I began this role in a part-time position. And unless the systemic industry of higher education changes, getting your foot in the door is vital.”
- Steven Bryant

Hope you all have a great Summer!

Alumni Spotlight – This month we are happy to highlight Eric Goble, MAHEL alumni since May 2018. Eric is working as the Senior Academic Advisor at the Northeastern University College of Science. His primary majors are Biology, Behavioral Neuroscience, and Linguistics. He works directly with the College of Science students in these programs to plan out their academic plans, including interests in post-graduation requirements and possible minors. Eric assists students with determining what courses to take, when to be enrolled in classes, and ensures that students can progress forward to graduation. He also assists students in transitioning into Northeastern, plotting out courses to take in their first semester and teaching the ‘Welcome to Northeastern’ first-year seminar. Fantastic work, Eric! 👏

For the current students,
“Take the time to connect with colleagues beyond just your office. Higher Ed is an intricately inter-connected field, and building relationships with staff across campus and even at numerous other institutions creates a professional network to leverage for support, advice, and recommendations.”

- Eric Goble

Alumni Spotlight – Meet Katharine East, our MAHEL Alumni since April 2019. Kat is working as the Recruitment and Admissions Coordinator at the Marsal Family School of Education at the University of Michigan. Her primary role is application processing for undergraduate and graduate applicants. She checks each application to ensure all their materials have been received and communicates with applicants to complete their applications if not. Kat also works with program staff and faculty to facilitate timely management of the dispersal of applications to reviewers, and the completion of the review and decision process. When she is not doing application processing, she meets with prospective students to provide program information, application process details, and resources to ensure they have all of the information they need to apply! Wonderful work Kat. Keep it up!

For the current students,
“Don't be afraid to try things you're unfamiliar with, you never know what might be a good fit! There are so many opportunities in Higher Education, you might find passion in something unexpected!”
- Katharine East

Alumni Spotlight – For the last month of this year, we are glad to highlight Olivia Rademacher, MAHEL alumni since May 2023. Olivia is the Regional Admissions Adviser of Undergraduate Admissions at Oakland University. The focus of her work is connecting with prospective OU undergraduate students and their families as they navigate the OU application process. Olivia travels to high schools and college fairs in West Michigan and Northern Michigan to make students aware of all OU has to offer; schedule appointments to assist incoming transfer and first-year students with any questions or concerns they have; and participate in recruitment events and support programs both virtually and on OU's campus. Way to go, Olivia!

For the current students,
“My advice for any student in college, whether in their undergraduate or graduate program, is to become involved in something in your field while you're in school. This will help you decide you're on the right path for yourself; and if you decide that you are, that experience will motivate you to stay engaged and involved in your studies and will make school so much more enjoyable for you!”
- Olivia Rademacher
