Over the past year, the pop culture landscape has been dominated by strong female figures such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Barbie, all emerging as symbols of empowerment and resilience at a time when women’s rights have been scrutinized legally and politically. But how do these depictions of women align with the lived experiences of women today? Can we leverage this cultural moment to drive tangible progress by amplifying diverse voices, advocating for policy reforms, and promoting women's leadership across sectors? We aim to translate the momentum generated by these icons into meaningful advancements for women everywhere.
This virtual discussion will be led by speakers Marie-Joelle Estrada, associate professor of psychology at the University of Rochester, and Aviva Dove-Viebahn, ’07 (MA), ’10 (PhD), assistant professor of English and film and media studies at Arizona State University, who specialize in gender, representation in popular culture, and contemporary visual art and media.
