Students in the course ART 2300: Painting (instructor Ryan Standfest), worked from drawings of landscapes that were translated into oil sketches on a toned canvas. The subject of the landscape was used here to explore a move away from direct observation and strict representation to create an image that is rooted in Expressionism. Students then applied an arbitrary color palette, meaning that they devised a color palette not based on observation or environmental light, but rather on more expressive goals. Shading does not need to be an issue, grass should not green- it could be purple, as an example. The sky should not be blue. The color should not represent observable reality, but must reflect an internal, emotional state turned outward.
