Nearly two dozen medical students from Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine recently visited The Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills as they prepare for a profound journey—a study trip to Auschwitz.

This visit on April 15 marked what one OUWB official called “the first big step” before their trip to Poland (June 18-25).

At OUWB, medical students are going beyond textbooks to learn how to identify malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and other nutrition-related issues — through a new hands-on skills session called the Nutrition Focused Physical Exam.

Part of the Art & Practice of Medicine (APM) curriculum, this session takes place at the Clinical Skills Training & Simulation Center and gives students the chance to practice head-to-toe nutrition-focused exams on standardized patients — and each other.

From examining hair, eyes, and oral cavity to assessing muscle mass and subcutaneous fat, students are learning what to look for and how to document findings that could change a patient’s outcome.

Being able to identify malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and other nutrition-related issues is a regular part of being a doctor — and the focus of a new skills session offered by OUWB.

Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine students recently participated in a high-impact birthing simulation event at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak.

Hosted by the OB-GYN Interest Group (OGIG) at the Applebaum Simulation Learning Center, the event gave 25 medical students the chance to rotate through four hands-on stations — from C-sections to forceps- and vacuum-assisted deliveries.

Students learned suturing, reviewed anatomy, and practiced delivering a model baby — all while being guided by OB-GYN residents and physicians, including OUWB alumnae like Parisa Bastani, M.D. '24.

Betty Judah, M2 and OGIG president, said the event was created to inspire curiosity and confidence in obstetrics and gynecology.

“Experiences like this not only help us become better students, but they also set the foundation for being better doctors for our future patients.”

OUWB’s Global Health Team recently brought together students, faculty, and guests around a powerful idea: global health isn’t just about working outside the U.S. — it’s about bringing the lessons home.

Several medical students shared how international experiences transformed their perspectives. They worked in resource-limited hospitals, saw surgery through a “low-resource, high-ingenuity” lens, and experienced what one student called a “rediscovery of purpose.”

Stories like these are why OUWB integrates global health across all four years — and offers opportunities to study in places like Ghana, Poland, Mexico, and more. These aren’t just trips. They’re life-changing moments that shape future physicians.

As one OUWB official put it: “This opportunity is going to change their future careers — and they will teach countless others.”

OUWB’s World Health Day recently featured students, faculty, and guests involved in the global practice of medicine, with a common throughline: one person can make a difference, regardless of location.

We’re thrilled to share that OUWB graduate and future neurologist Ryan Victor-Joseph, M.D., has received the 2026 Leonard Tow Humanism Award – an honor given to those who truly embody compassion, empathy, and respect in patient care.

Victor-Joseph believes altruism is “the crux of medicine.” His classmates and faculty describe him as “kind, selfless, and hardworking” – the kind of person you’d want by your side when things get tough.

“All of these people in my class I look up to, and for me to be chosen out of this pool of great, amazing medical students …I was super stunned and really grateful,” he said.

One conversation at a time. 💙

During OUWB's Medical Education Week, Stanford educator Dr. Kelley Skeff reminded clinicians and educators that true patient care starts with connection.

His solution? Shorter, more meaningful patient histories focused on the chronology and ecology of a patient's illness, and the strengths the patient already brings.

He called it the "Cole-Shoichet Model," honoring the late Dr. Sandor Shoichet—a beloved physician and teacher who helped shape OUWB's Medical Education Week, and left a beautiful legacy, formed one conversation at a time.

The use of e-bikes is on the rise, and so are e-bike injuries.

“As the weather warms up, we’re seeing more kids out riding e-bikes — and unfortunately, more injuries coming with that,” said Dr. Allison Ball, a pediatric hospitalist at Corewell Health. “Nationally, injuries have more than doubled over the past few years. These bikes can reach speeds of 20 to 28 mph, which raises the risk of serious injuries — especially head injuries — and we’re still seeing pretty low helmet use. It’s really important for parents to talk with their kids about safety and keep a close eye on them while they’re riding.”

Below are a few safety tips to remember:

🔵Wear a fitted, speed-rated helmet.
🔵Use an age-appropriate e-bike.
🔵Follow training recommendations.
🔵Ride on bike paths before moving to the street.
🔵Follow traffic laws.

Medical and physical therapy students recently gathered to honor those often called their “silent teachers” at the 2026 OUWB Anatomy Memorial — an event that carried additional meaning this year.

Held May 11 at Oakland University’s Oakland Center, the annual ceremony memorialized donors who selflessly contributed their bodies for educational purposes. About 200 people attended.

This year’s memorial carried added significance because it was the first time families of some donors were present, said Malli Barremkala, M.D., associate professor, Department of Foundational Medical Studies, and director of OUWB's Body Donation Program.

“To have the families come and listen and see how students, faculty, and the whole community benefit from the donors is something that I’ve been looking forward to as director of the program,” he said.

On Friday, the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine celebrated its Class of 2026 — and 123 medical students officially became doctors.

Surrounded by nearly 1,000 family members, friends, and faculty at OU's O'rena, 119 of the graduates walked across the stage as the 12th class to complete their medical education at OUWB.

"This is what all those early mornings and late nights were for," said Oakland University President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, M.D. "We are so proud of you."

Class speaker Nathan Huang, M.D., put it simply: "The days were long, but the years were short. Now let's keep showing up."

Many of the new doctors said the journey was defined by lifelong friendships, incredible mentors, and the kind of bond that only comes from going through medical school together.

Said Mark Whitton, M.D.: "Today feels fantastic. Now it's just keep working toward the next goal."

Please join us in congratulating the graduates!

Commencement was held Friday for Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine’s Class of 2026, as 123 new doctors were celebrated for their accomplishments during the past four years.
