Oakland University Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) is a program that allows students to custom design their degree!

BIS allows students to blend their own interests from multiple fields to create their own plan of study. This one-of-a-kind plan will prepare the student for our ever-changing economy. The program weaves flexibility and decision making into an opportunity for students to achieve unique personal and career goals. BIS is particularly well-suited for those who have a number of transfer credits, are targeting a specific graduate or professional program, or have interests across a number of areas.

BIS Alumni Spotlight: Justin, Class of 2022 🎓

After earning two associate degrees, Justin continued his academic journey through the BIS program, graduating in 2022. After graduation, he went on to complete a Master of Arts in Counseling in 2024.

Outside of his academic and professional work, Justin enjoys playing guitar, hosting his own podcast, and has also written a book.

Justin’s journey highlights how the BIS program can provide transfer students with a flexible pathway to complete their bachelor’s degree and continue pursuing advanced educational and professional goals.

After earning his Bachelor of Integrative Studies degree, Aaron went on to pursue his Master of Business Administration at Oakland University. He now owns his own business as a swim and triathlon coach, guiding athletes in reaching their performance goals. We’re proud to celebrate alumni who continue to grow and lead.

Thank you to Professor Richard Stamps for joining us at the BIS 50th Celebration Day!

Our history is rich, beginning in 1975 as Bachelor of General Studies, evolving into Integrative Studies, and now today’s Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. We’re grateful to have faculty like Professor Stamps who helped shape the program and continue supporting students 50 years later.
