This Friday at the Carolina Theatre CLT, "Lullabies and Life: A Poetic Juneteenth Celebration" will feature music written and arranged by Winthrop Professor of Music Leonard Mark Lewis. Alongside six award-winning Charlotte poets, Lewis will perform his music with the Charlotte Strings Collective, which will also feature Adjunct Professor of Violin Kari Giles!

This morning we welcomed our 2026 ST-ARTS program participants! 😊

Did you know? ST-ARTS (Students with Special Talents in the Arts) has been a summer program at Winthrop for over 30 years, with more than 9,000 middle school-aged students having attended since the program’s inception in 1989.

Students will spend the next three weeks at WU exploring their passion for visual arts, dance, drama and music! 🎨💃🎭🎺

"While I Breathe, I Hope" 🎵 alumnus James Kevin Gray '99 recently saw his work adopted as South Carolina's official state choral anthem, and we couldn't be prouder! Read more, and listen to the anthem:

Winthrop University alumnus James Kevin Gray ’99 received news this month that he had been waiting on for years. The song, “While I Breathe, I Hope,” that he wrote more than a decade ago was voted on by the S.C. General Assembly as the state’s official choral anthem.

If you weren’t able to attend last week’s public reception, there’s still time to check out 𝒮𝒾𝑔𝓃𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝐿𝒾𝒻𝑒 (curated by Alexis Howard '16 and Dylan Bannister '16), which remains at the Center for the Arts in downtown Rock Hill through June 13th.

In the words of Alexis and Dylan, 𝒮𝒾𝑔𝓃𝓈 𝑜𝒻 𝐿𝒾𝒻𝑒 lifts the veil obscuring appreciation of the commonplace and highlights the serendipitous beauty of everyday life. This exhibit challenges viewers to consider ordinary things – such as discarded furniture and parking lots – as spectacles, if one’s imagination is open to such an epiphany.

Tonight, Dr. Jeremy Mims and Professor Patton led the Winthrop Chorale and Collegiate Choir in a powerful American choral program. The centerpiece, Credo by Margaret Bonds, sets the words of W.E.B. Du Bois—among the most important civil rights writings prior to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What an honor to hear this work this night!
