Starting this weekend in Italy: The Tour de France! The 2024 Tour de France will be the 111th edition of the Tour de France. It will start in Florence, Italy, on 29 June, and will finish in Nice, France, on 21 July. The race will not finish in (or near) Paris for the first time since its inception, owing to preparations for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. 22 teams will take part in the race.

Italy will host the Grand Départ, for the first time. 2024 will be the 100th anniversary of the first Italian victory in the Tour, won by Ottavio Bottecchia in 1924. The route will also visit the microstate of San Marino, making it the 14th country to be visited by a Tour stage. The race will not finish in Paris, owing to preparations for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Instead, the tour will finish in Nice with an individual time trial—the last time a time trial was the final stage in the Tour was in 1989.

The first Tour de France was held in 1903 – with the aim of selling more newspapers… It was set up and sponsored by French sports paper L'Auto, which hoped a tough new endurance race around the country would capture the public's attention and boost its declining sales figures.

Did you know: you can go HERE with Winthrop's Study Abroad program? Welcome to Seville, Spain!

Seville is the birthplace of tapas, with streets lined with orange trees and a solar power tower providing clean and renewable energy to the city. Grab a snack at the café in the Alcazar Gardens and watch the peacocks casually stroll by your table, peruse the food market at Metropol Parasol (Setas de Sevilla), or visit Italica ruins (Conjunto Arqueológico de Itálica), an expansive, well-preserved, ancient Roman city featuring temple ruins & a huge amphitheater. There's no shortage of incredible architecture or fun things to do.

✨She's the albatross, she is here ✨ to tell you that you can see her and all of her friends in person when you study abroad with Winthrop's partnership with the Dunedin School of Art at Otago Polytechnic University in Dunedin, New Zealand. 🥰

Did you know: Dunedin is the wildlife capital of New Zealand, with a wide variety of species, including "the northern royal albatross, one of the largest sea birds on the planet; its 3m wingspan helps it travel thousands of kilometers across the Southern Ocean to feed, returning to land to breed. Taiaroa Head at the tip of Otago Peninsula is the only mainland breeding ground in the world for this endangered species (the few others being on remote uninhabited islands), and The Royal Albatross Centre helps protect the colony while enabling a close-up look at the birds and their life cycle, from courtship and nesting to growing chicks eagerly welcoming a parent gliding in with a feed after a lengthy fishing trip."
