5 weeks. 11 teams. Real-world engineering solutions. One unforgettable Demo Day.

After five weeks of designing, building, testing, collaborating, and problem-solving, our Jumpstart Your Engineering Career students took the stage to showcase what they created in our summer program.

Demo Day brought together students, families, educators, engineering professionals, community partners, elected officials, and supporters to celebrate the incredible work of this summer’s cohort.

Students demo'd their prototypes, shared the engineering behind their solutions, presented their projects on stage, and connected with professionals from across the engineering community.

We were also honored to welcome Dr. Tsu-Jae Liu, President of the National Academy of Engineering, as our keynote speaker. Her time with our students—from visiting their projects during the showcase to joining us for the evening program made the day even more special.

A very special thank-you to The Universities at Shady Grove for being the home of our five-week summer program and Demo Day. USG's partnership, support, and welcoming campus played an important role in making this experience possible for our students.

Another special recognition needs to go to Dr. Nestor Michael Tiglao who was the Chief Innovation Architect of the Jumpstart Summer Program. He led lectures and aided the students in their projects, helping them to think and design like engineers.

We are incredibly proud of what these students accomplished in just five weeks, and Demo Day was the perfect way to celebrate their hard work, creativity, and growth.

Oliver Salter made the most of his time at USG by saying yes to new opportunities. 🎓

While completing UMBC’s social work program, he joined the Peer Advisory Team, participated in the Communication Fellows program, supported Advocacy Day through the NASW Student-Faculty Liaison Committee and served as president of the Social Work Student Association.

Along the way, Oliver grew as a leader and strengthened the communication and organizational skills that will support his next chapter: pursuing a Master of Social Work through the University of Maryland School of Social Work at USG.

His advice to future students?

“If you’re considering studying at USG, take the leap and join us. If you’re looking for a personal learning environment with faculty and staff who are invested in your success, USG is the place to be!”

What happens when students tackle real-world challenges from multiple perspectives?

This summer, the Universities at Shady Grove brought together community college students for our Summer Experiential Learning Community—a hands-on program designed to explore the connections between health, justice, and the environment through cross-disciplinary collaboration.

With guidance from faculty and mentors representing the University of Maryland School of Nursing, University of Maryland School of Social Work, UMBC-Shady Grove Social Work Program, and the University of Maryland Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, students worked together to develop practical solutions to issues like housing equity and tenants' rights, recruiting and retaining nursing professionals, and youth violence prevention in schools.

By connecting students with real community challenges and collaborative learning experiences, we're helping them broaden their perspectives, strengthen practical skills, and prepare to make a meaningful impact—wherever their educational journey leads next.
