From Wesleyan to Duke. 🎓➡️🩺

Isabel Neall ’25 is now in her second year of Physical Therapy school at Duke University and she recently reached out to thank the Wesleyan faculty who helped her get there.

Reflecting on her time at NC Wesleyan, Isabel shared:
“Your commitment to the learning and professional development of your students is what has allowed me to accomplish what I have and be where I am.”

We couldn’t be prouder to see where her Wesleyan journey has taken her. From the classroom to the next step in her professional career, Isabel is a great example of what can happen when students are known, supported and prepared to pursue what’s next.

Keep going, Isabel. We’ll be cheering you on every step of the way! 💙

North Carolina Wesleyan University mourns the passing of longtime Board of Trustees member and devoted Wesleyan supporter, Francis “Marion” Barnes.

For Marion Barnes, Wesleyan was more than an institution he served, it was part of his family’s legacy. His father, Guy E. Barnes, was one of Wesleyan’s founders, and Marion carried that connection forward through decades of service, leadership and generosity to the University.

Marion served on the Board of Trustees from 2012–2020 and again from 2023 until his passing in 2026. Over the years, he served on numerous committees, including Athletics, Building & Grounds, Committee on Trustees, Development, Investment and Finance. He chaired the Investment Committee from 2019–2022, the Committee on Trustees from 2023–2025, and the Athletics Committee from 2025–2026.

His impact could be seen across campus, from his leadership in raising more than $2 million toward Wesleyan’s stadium expansion to his personal generosity supporting our students.

Most recently, Marion was the lead donor behind the “Angel Scholarships” provided to working adult students at Christmas 2025.

He attended countless home football games, always cheering on our Battling Bishops, but his greatest investment was in our students and the future of Wesleyan.

The planned Marion Barnes Press Box, part of Phase II of the stadium project, will serve as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary commitment to NC Wesleyan.

We are grateful for Marion’s leadership, generosity, friendship and unwavering belief in Wesleyan. His legacy will continue to live on through the University and the students whose lives he helped shape.

Our deepest condolences are with his family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We will miss him dearly. 💙

Celebrating connections that extend beyond our campus. ❤️💙

NC Wesleyan’s Associate Dean of APS Admissions, Joy Smallwood, recently had the honor of attending the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Thomas. The moment was especially meaningful as Joy and Chief Thomas are sisters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The connection also reflects the strong ties between NC Wesleyan and our Rocky Mount community. Members of the local Delta Sigma Theta chapter joined us at Rock the Mount this semester, helping welcome our students and celebrate the start of a new academic year.

From campus to community, we’re proud of the relationships that bring us together. ❤️💙

From the classroom to the real world. 🌍

NCWU’s Correctional Institutions class recently welcomed current psychology and Criminal Justice student and newly appointed Correctional Officer Ulrick Volk, who gave students an inside look at what it’s really like to work in corrections.

Joined by Nash Correctional Institution Warden Talena Lee, Officer Volk shared firsthand experiences, career opportunities, challenges, responsibilities and the realities of working in a correctional institution.
Experiences like these give our students the opportunity to learn beyond the textbook and connect what they’re learning in the classroom to careers in the field. 👏

🩺 One of the Great 100!

We are incredibly proud of NC Wesleyan alumna Celina Hawkins '24, BSN, RN, who has been named one of the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina! 🎉

Celina earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from NC Wesleyan University and now serves as the education coordinator at ECU Health Edgecombe Hospital, where she has spent 14 years supporting professional development, clinical excellence and lifelong learning among fellow nurses.

Her story is a reminder that a nursing degree isn't just about where you start. It's about where your education can take you.
We are proud to prepare the nurses, educators and healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
