Today we mourn the loss of jazz great Sonny Rollins by featuring one of his landmark, and rarer, albums. 'Freedom Suite,' his 1958 recording for saxophone, bass, and drums trio (with Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach providing bass and drums, respectively), originally included in the sleeve notes a poignant paragraph about the inhumane and hypocritical treatment of Black Americans. Riverside, the record label, quickly reissued the LP under a different title without the controversial paragraph. The Sonoma State Library is lucky to own the original, uncensored 'Freedom Suite' in our LP collection.

Thanks to staff member Jack Ritchie for highlighting the history of this work.

As we close out a week dedicated to highlighting the fantastic work created by Sonoma State students and faculty, the library wants to draw your attention to our institutional repository, ScholarWorks, a growing home for SSU research. While it currently features a strong collection of graduate theses, it also includes selected faculty work, and we're actively working to expand it.

Importantly, ScholarWorks provides a pathway to making SSU research more visible and accessible to the local communities the campus serves as well as a global audience. Check it out today: https://scholarworks.calstate.edu/

As Sonoma State tonight hosts its annual Take Back the Night event to raise awareness surrounding sexual assault, domestic violence, and r**e culture, we wanted to share these images from the April 20, 1999, 'Sonoma State Star' to highlight the history of SSU's efforts. According to the library's University Archives, the university first held a Take Back the Night event in 1994.

This evening's event will be held 6-8 p.m. at The Hub and is sponsored by the Counseling and Psychological Services and Confidential Advocacy offices.
