On Thursday, June 18, Sonoma State’s Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony will provide an opportunity for the campus community to reflect on the ongoing journey toward liberation, hope, and justice. The ceremony, which will include remarks from campus and community leaders, begins at noon at the University Flagpoles near the main campus entrance.

Juneteenth, marks the day in 1865 when more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas learned they were free – two and half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. Often called the nation’s “second Independence Day,” Juneteenth has long been celebrated by Black communities across the country and became a federal holiday in 2021.
