Do you have free time and are looking for something to do? Are you looking to make a difference? The Interfraternity Council is the major fraternity council on campus that includes the eight fraternities, Alpha Epsilon Pi (ΑΕΠ), Alpha Psi (ΑΨ), Alpha Sigma Phi (ΑΣΦ), Kappa Alpha Psi (ΚΑΨ), Nu Alpha Kappa (ΝΑΚ), Phi Delta Theta (ΦΔΘ), and Tau Kappa Epsilon (ΤΚΕ). The IFC board oversees the complian
ce of these seven fraternities throughout the course of the year, as well as hosts events and formal rush. You may ask, why go Greek? Why rush a fraternity? Well here are some facts. Since 1825, all but three of the United States' presidents have been members of a fraternity, 85% of fortune 500 executives were part of Greek life, and college graduation rates are 20% higher among Greeks than non-Greeks. This begs the question: Does being part of Greek life increase your chance at success? You may think that since Sonoma State University is so small, that you can’t make a lasting difference, which is not the case. You have to ask yourself what do you want out of college. Are you looking to be a leader? Are you looking to help out the community and be involved with philanthropies? Are you looking to excel in academics? Looking for brotherhood? Looking to stay involved with athletics? There is something for everyone when looking into what the fraternities that IFC has to offer. When looking at leadership opportunities, it is easy to find them through Greek life. Even though Greek life makes up 20% of Sonoma State University’s student body, about half of the current Associate Student Officers and Senate are made up of members from fraternities and sororities. Outside of just Sonoma State University politics, the former Vice President of Legislative Affairs for the California State Student Association hails from one of our own IFC fraternities here at Sonoma State. If you are looking into community service or philanthropy involvement, our fraternities log in hundreds of hours a year in community service ranging from fixing up community centers to lending a helping hand in local events for charity. Through philanthropy work, thousands are dollars are raised each year with money going to such fraternity philanthropies as the Live Strong Foundation or St. Jude’s Children Hospital. If academics are your thing, countless hours of a year are put into studying in the library leading to fraternity men’s GPAs being higher than the overall student body’s average GPA. When looking into brotherhood, life long bonds can be found in fraternities. You can meet the best friends you will have in life, while bonding through brotherhoods and retreats. Lastly when looking at athletics, many IFC fraternity members are heavily involved in club sports and intramurals. Also at the end of every year IFC hosts a sport tournament amongst the IFC Fraternities called Greek Olympics. A case can be made that this is the biggest sporting event on campus. As you can see, there is something for everyone. You can accomplish any goal you set for yourself through Greek Life. Come out to Info night and learn about each and every fraternity and learn what they have to offer. Go Greek!
