Throughout his decades-long career as a painter, sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker, continuously searched, in his own words, “for the same things, which I have perhaps realized by different means.”1 Celebrated as both an orchestrator of tonal harmonies and a draftsman capable of distilling a form to its essentials, he long sought a way to unite color and line in his work. The relationship between these two formal elements can be traced from early works like Dance (I)—in which the side of a dancer’s body, set against fields of rich blue and green, is described in a single, arcing contour—to his late cut-outs like The Swimming Pool, in which the artist discovered a way at the end of his life to “cut directly into vivid color.” For more information go to https://www.moma.org/artists/3832

After graduation, did you freelance or work for someone else?
When I ( )graduated, I had a pretty tough decision to make because I was offered a really good job opportunity with Apple. I felt a little bit of pressure to take the money and move out to California. My other option was to move to New York and intern with which was a modestly paid position in comparison. But again, in my gut, something was telling me that New York was calling, so that’s where I ended up.
When I moved to NY, most of my friends had moved to other parts of the country or even other countries. I was kind of lonely during my first few months in NY, so I threw myself into my work. Within the first few months of my internship, I started freelancing through Pentagram; I was also getting a lot of my own freelance clients. Then, Paula Scher helped me get my first job shortly thereafter as an art director for Everything fell into place pretty quickly.
