The Sac State plant collection has some amazing species. Currently one of the ghost orchid species (Dendrophylax sallei) is blooming.

These are called ghost orchids because they do not grow leaves. These roots contain chloroplasts and preform photosynthesis in place of the absent leaves. As epiphytes, their roots are appressed against trees and often not seen until an inflorescence emerges with the pale green flowers seemingly coming from nowhere.
