MMIP2S+ (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples and Two-Spirit people) Day of Action is a day of awareness and remembrance that brings attention to the ongoing violence disproportionately impacting Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals. It is a time to honor those who are missing, support families and communities, and advocate for justice and change.
Why May 5th?
May 5th became a day of recognition following the 2010 disappearance and death of Hanna Harris, a Northern Cheyenne woman. Her case, along with the advocacy of Indigenous families, organizers, and grassroots movements, helped bring national attention to the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. Since then, May 5th has become a day of action, remembrance, and advocacy across Indigenous communities.
As highlighted in our event materials, this day centers the message: โNot Invisible. Not Forgotten.โ
