Sophia joined the COUGH Student Leadership Board this year as a new member with the desire to continue her work in to***co control on the college and university level. She became involved in to***co control as a youth, working on a local level to ban the sale of flavored to***co products in her hometown and was a former member of the CYAN Youth Board of Directors. As a COUGH Student Leader, Sophia was on the orientation subcommittee and worked on a statewide training to educate students on the effects of to***co use before they enter a college or university campus. COUGH has allowed her to collaborate with other advocates to spread awareness through their daily actions while working towards systemic change on the college level. We’re excited to continue working with Sophia as she will be a returning board member for 2020-2021.

Richmund joined the COUGH Student Leadership Board as a new member for 2019-2020. On a local level, he took part in developing a “to***co school” program and has worked to apply this to college campuses across the state on the compliance subcommittee. After seeing how substance use on campus was affecting the health of peers and professors, he became a smoke and to***co-free advocate to change the stigma of to***co and smoke use. Richmund’s time on COUGH has allowed him to gain new perspectives from differing viewpoints and frames of references from other students and state leaders to expand his ideas about how to***co, va**ng, and substance use abuse is affecting the health of the local community and the greater region as a whole.

Samantha joined the COUGH Student Leadership Board this year as a new member. Being a smoke/to***co-free advocate is important to her because many people don’t receive education on to***co use, despite its prevalence in society. Samantha has seen the effects of to***co use on family and friends, which made her want to be a part of an organization where she could be active in addressing the problem. As a COUGH Student Leader, she’s been working with other students on a College Orientation project and had the opportunity to be directly involved in providing college students with access to educational materials and resources on addiction and quitting.

Nathan is a returning member of COUGH and a recent graduate from Sac State. He became involved in to***co control to be a part in changing the environment so to***co is not normalized and change can be seen in our society. Through COUGH, he has collaborated with other campus representatives to learn about their experiences and more about current policies and trends to better support his campus as a to***co-free advocate. Since graduating in Fall 2019, Nathan earned his EMT license and is currently applying to grad school for a Public Health Nurse program, where he wants to continue advocating for those who are targeted or are unable to, while gaining clinical experience.

Bhagvat joined the COUGH Student Leadership Board as a new member this year. As a member of the policy subcommittee, he worked on providing resources and education to the SSCCC about the importance of smoke/to***co-free policies on college campuses along with encouraging the implementation of cessation programs to support students in quitting to***co. Bhagvat got involved in to***co control after seeing friends become addicted to to***co and the impact it had on their school, family, and health. After joining COUGH, he was able to further advocate against adolescent to***co use and learn the skills to continue this work in the future.

Netflix recently pledged to cut down on depictions of smoking in future original shows rated TV-14 or below (and all films rated PG-13 or below). This announcement comes after a study conducted by the Truth Initiative showed to***co imagery has tripled within the past year in most popular programs among 15-to-24 year olds.

The streaming content giant said it will stop showing smoking or e-cigarette use in future shows unless it is "essential." New research finds to***co imagery on popular shows has skyrocketed.
