Higher Education Leadership Program, CSUS Masters of Arts in Higher Education Leadership

Thank you for your interest in the Sacramento State Master of Arts in Education: Higher Education Leadership program. The program is committed to preparing its students for leadership roles in institutions of higher education—both 2- and 4-year – through a well- rounded academic experience. The program is designed to prepare exemplary leaders for California’s 21st century community colleges, 4-yea

r universities, and private postsecondary institutions, as well as other educational organizations. This program promotes learning, equity, and achievement for all students in a pluralistic society, and seeks to prepare transformational leaders with the capacity to facilitate and manage change. The program is organized around four interrelated core themes that are central to the professional leadership and management of all educational organizations:

Visionary Leadership and Management
Policy into Practice
Data for Decision-Making
Building Community in a Diverse Society

Each of these themes is integrated across the curriculum and addressed with a combination of teaching and learning strategies, including service, learning, and cooperative learning.

It is with great respect that we remember graduate Tanya Culliver-Whitlow (2006) who passed away May 9, 2021. Tanya is remembered as a "beautiful soul" whose commitment to the success of her students was a real-life example of our principles/practices of putting students first. Her leadership at UC Davis' College of engineering LEADR program was inspiring and effective. Tanya will be sorely missed by her family, colleagues, friends and her many students. We hope you will all join us in sending our condolences to Tanya's family and friends.

More information is available: https://engineering.ucdavis.edu/news/memoriam-tanya-whitlow

Her family has requested that donations be made to the United Negro College Fund in lieu of flowers.

Anyone interested in attending a memorial service to remember Tanya (scheduled for May 20) may contact Dr. Cowan at Sac State ([email protected]) for time and location.

Higher education leaders must stay on top of the happenings in our field. Recently, federal Education Secretary Betsy DeVos released her "plan" for higher education. What do you think? Though there's not much detail available (yet), our colleagues at ACE and other professional organizations are commenting. Check it out:

The education secretary offered a broad policy blueprint that, for some officials, was welcome after nearly two years with little clear direction. How she will achieve her goals is another matter.
