Sacramento State STORC

Sacramento State STORC Sustainable Technology Optimization Research Center is an open lab area for all Sac State's Colleges to utilize.

The Sustainable Technology Outdoor/Optimization Research Center (STORC) is a highly collaborative teaching and learning model. It encourages innovation and teamwork among administration, faculty and student populations from multiple educational disciplines, representing various campus interests, by promoting, supporting, and housing ongoing sustainable technology research projects within a common

functional space. Because numerous research projects coexist within the same functional footprint, knowledge of various technologies is easily acquired and transferred. Those working on STORC related research projects quickly recognize how dissimilar technologies might be configured to contribute to the enhanced performance of other technologies. As a practical, living laboratory and a multi-disciplinary center for learning, STORC synergistically enhances research outcomes and student learning experiences. Interdisciplinary participation in STORC includes professors and students from Natural Science and Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science, Social Science and Interdisciplinary Services, and from various administrative offices such as Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, and Facilities Management. STORC is an example of Sac State’s ingenuity in furthering research and education, and is redefining traditional models of knowledge acquisition and transfer, and exemplifies every aspect of high-quality leadership that Sacramento State strives to inculcate in its faculty, staff and students. The STORC is located at California State University, Sacramento on the southeast side of the Guy West Bridge on State University Drive.

Nearly two years ago, Sacramento State professors Dudley Burton and Brook Murphy talked in this column about creating and experimenting with a sustainable circle of life on a scrap of university land near the American River bike trail, but it was more of an arc of life at that time.

Jason Hall, left, Matthew M. Swanson, Rogelio Rodriguez, and Michael Edwards are the creators of the vertical axis wind turbine, a proof of concept of a wind turbine optimized for areas like Sacramento with low average wind speed conditions. The potentially revolutionary design is constructed from a steel frame and carbon fiber composite. Its twisted construction is designed to provide consistent force through each revolution, maximizing its efficiency. (Sacramento State/Jessica Vernone)

Aquaponics display by Sacramento State is up for viewing at the California State Fair Farm. Students are using the display to educate the public about sustainable alternative methods for producing food. Key notes to aquaponics is water efficiency, rapid plant growth, produces protein alongside plants, and can be done anywhere without the need for soil.

Come visit the Aquaponics education display at the State Fair, where the fish are the stars!

You have the opportunity to intern with Erik Powell in Loomis this summer. Erik runs a large commercial aquaponics farm, and recently has taken the management position over Del Oro High Schools aquaponic greenhouse. You will intern at both sites, gaining extensive knowledge pertaining to greenhouse management, as well as managing aquaponic systems. Aquaponics is a fast growing agricultural model as California's drought, and the organic/foodie movement forces the industry toward sustainable, local, organic methods.

Contact Erik if you wish to intern with him this summer. Internship hours are flexible.
