Congrats to Clarissa Kotska, SCSU ’15, on finishing her Masters of Educational Leadership in July and getting a job working for MN DEED (Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development)! Her position is vocational rehabilitation counselor working with high school/ transition students with disabilities in the St. Paul area.

Clarissa graduated from SCSU in 2015 with a SOC Major (Critical Applied Sociology Concentration).

Kevin Revier, SCSU Sociology Alum, class of 2012. He finished his PhD at Binghamton University in 2019 and is now an assistant professor at Arcadia University. Kevin earned the 2019 Distinguished Dissertation Award from Binghamton University for his dissertation “Policing Pain: Opioids, Crisis, and a Shifting War on Drugs”.

Class of 2012 Sociology alum Robert Muschler. Robert did a double major in Sociology and Planning and Community Development and went on to complete an MPA at USC in 2015. Since then he has worked in LA and recently returned to Minneapolis to work with NGOs doing strategic planning work. It was great to catch up with him and do this interview!

In 2011 Kevin Revier won the Sociologists of Minnesota Carolyn Rose Undergraduate Essay Competition for an essay he wrote for the Sociology of Religion Seminar. He graduated with a BA from SCSU in 2011. Fast forward to today. Kevin's dissertation, which he wrote at Binghamton University and completed last year just won the Binghamton University Dissertation of the Year Award. His topic was "Policing Pain: Opioids, Crisis, and a Shifting War on Drugs." Now he's a professor at Arcadia University, where he has just completed his first year of teaching. Congrats!

In Almo, Idaho, a slab of stone carved into the shape of Idaho memorializes a shocking incident in the history of the west: “Dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in a horrible Indian massacre, 1861. Three hundred immigrants west bound. Only five escaped.”
The only problem with this marker is that 300 immigrants were not killed in 1861. Thirty were not; three were not. It never happened at all. A fine western historian, Brigham Madsen, devoted years of research to showing that this event could not have happened. Why, then, does the marker stay up? Well, it’s the biggest thing that ever happened in Almo, even though it never happened!
