Here comes fall semester! Our event series theme for academic year 2022-2023 is Labor.

We've got a great line-up for the fall – perspectives and expertise to help us think about how labor makes our world, about how our world organizes labor, and about how we might imagine a world in which labor is visible and honored.

In dialogue with our speakers, interested students will start the process of designing a Labor-themed mural.

Community muraling of the Multicultural Center is under way. In this small section of the wall, student artists have added the Virgen of Guadalupe, the Spanish word "PROTEGER" (protect), and the Greek word for Hospitality. Beauty is sometimes a process. Beauty is emerging.

Our current mural is under way, co-authored and community-sourced. Inclusion/Radical Hospitality is the theme. We've got some great student leadership, and we're looking forward to seeing how a community of muralistas shapes our public space.

We had a great conversation with Dr. Nicole Fabricant this week, about environmental justice, the racialization of urban space, and community land trusts as the basis for a community-based model for economic development. Listen in at the link!

Dr. Fabricant examines grassroots activists' envisioning, dreaming and working towards alternative land ownership, agro-ecology, and the building of land tru...

We've got another great line-up in store this semester. Our theme for both Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 will be Race and Climate Change. Our speakers represent a range of voices and perspectives on the critical realities of climate change and related demands for environmental justice. Our central premise: Understanding reality and acting on it requires an inclusive politics.

Ruperta Bautista visited our campuses for a Latino/Latin American Studies-sponsored residency several years ago. She led our students in some very powerful poetical meditations on our relationship to the natural world.

Almost there! Our muralists are putting the finishing touches on the Human Rights/Respect mural. The reflection and conversations that went into the long process of design have taken shape in this image: Seeing and being seen, respect (from the Latin for "looking back at") as a kind of action at the core of human rights advocacy and defense, the environmental world as our interlocutor, respect for which is also fundamental and in need of our respect. Beauty and an ethical and political proposal, conjured together in a work of public art.

As we near the end of fall semester, our muralists continue work on our Human Rights/Respect for All mural. Knowledge and education, listening and being awake to the world, movement, creativity, advocacy and speaking out – all forms of power within our reach.
