CSB / SJU Square One

Square One is a non-profit seeking to empower local economic development by creating lasting business ventures for communities in the developing world.

Over the past three years, a group of students has traveled to Hope Academy, located in rural Uganda, with hopes of having an impact on the students and the local community. We've successfully implemented two sustainable business ventures that are currently fully functional and are financially supporting the school and its teachers. During the 2013-14 school year, Square One will expand its impact

by beginning the discovery phase of our project in a new location in Nairobi, Kenya. We will also be traveling back to Hope Academy to re-evaluate the long term sustainability of the ventures we have already begun to ensure they are still as impactful as we expect them to be.

Join us for the premiere of Something to Smile About, a documentary created by Benedictine Volunteer Corps alumni Sam Rengo and Peyton Reece.  This film tells the story of their time in Nairobi, Kenya — where art, community, and resilience intersect in powerful and unexpected ways. Through relationships built in the Mathare community, the documentary captures moments of joy, struggle, and creativity that reveal what it means to live with dignity and hope.  A social worker, a basketball player, and an artist navigate life in Mathare, Kenya - Africa’s second largest slum, reminding us that even though life is unfair, there’s always Something to Smile About.

Last night, the Square One Global team had the opportunity to attend the Extending the Link meeting. We’re so grateful for the chance to ask thoughtful questions, learn from their experiences, and celebrate all the impactful work happening at ETL.
It was inspiring to connect over shared experiences abroad, nonprofit passions, and curiosities about the world around us.

We are looking forward to their upcoming Annual ETL Permire on April 30th!

Hi!! Our team recently returned from our 2026 Square One experience 🤍🌍
 Gina Udd, Lucy Farley, Will Arnold, and Zachariah Hunter spent two incredible weeks in Kenya visiting our nonprofit partners in Nairobi and the Decent Living Institute of Organic Farming in Nunguni. We learned from past projects, built meaningful relationships with our partners, and had the opportunity to explore and experience the beauty of this country.

A huge thank you to Lenore and the entire team at for welcoming us and sharing the inspiring work of Alfajiri Street Kids Art.

Thank you to Peter and the team at DLIOF in Nunguni. Your village is filled with so much joy, and it was truly a blessing to spend time with your community.

Thank you to Logan Lintvedt for leading our group and thoughtfully planning each day with so much grace. We are incredibly grateful for your time, commitment, and enthusiasm.

And thank you to Brother Aelred for your wisdom, perspective, and leadership. Your presence was vital to this experience, and we are so thankful for you.

On Monday, the Square One Global team had the opportunity to attend the Entrepreneurship Spirit of the Year award ceremony hosted by the We had a wonderful night connecting with alumni, sharing stories about square one travel, and learning from the amazing award recipients. This event was help to honor alumni who launch and lead ventures, seize opportunities, and create lasting value. Thank you to generous donors who supported our team in attending this event!
