MWSU Department of Computer Science, Math, and Physics Welcome to the Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics (CSMP). Our faculty are dedicated to teaching and research.

The faculty are very knowledgeable, patient, available, and willing to help our students. The faculty’s research areas include biomathematics, abstract algebra, differential equations, mathematics education, and physics education. Our faculty regularly serve as reviewers for academic journals and textbooks, organizers for regional and national conferences, and as consultants for business and legis

latures. In addition to teaching, the department provides students with numerous applied learning opportunities: undergraduate research, internships, and service projects. CSMP students regularly present at academic conferences. Our students have won many awards and honors including Gold Medals at the International Genetically Engineered Machines Jamboree (iGEM), First and Second Place at the National Collegiate Conference of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). Our administrative assistant, Deb Smith, retired on Friday, February 28. Although we are sad to see her leave, and are not sure how we will manage to function without her, we would like to congratulate Deb and wish her the best for her retirement.

The MWSU Department of Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physics hosted Girl Scout Badge Workshops in Cybersecurity and Space Exploration for Daisy, Brownie, and Junior scouts. Eleven faculty members and two students engaged Girl Scouts (ages 5 to 11) in fun, educational activities such as decoding messages in a scavenger hunt and exploring our planetary neighbors and the phases of the moon.

Missouri Western math major Tosha Wilson spent her summer working as an actuarial intern at Kansas City Life Insurance Company. She is excited to report that she has accepted a full-time actuarial position at Cameron Mutual Insurance Company, where she will work with Missouri Western alumnus Barry Korthanke ('05). Tosha plans to graduate this December with a mathematics degree, as well as a general business minor.

Samuel Wold ('13) stopped by the CSMP Department recently, prior to beginning his new position as Risk Management Analyst at Zions Bancorporation in Utah. Samuel majored in Mathematics and Economics at Missouri Western and went on to complete a Masters degree in Statistics at Brigham Young University.
