On this day of her birthday, we remember Octavia Butler, the author of major Afrofuturistic works such as Parable of the Sower and Kindred, to just name two of her many titles. Winner of two Nebula Awards and two Hugo Awards, she is a classic for those interested in sci-fi. Her work continues to be relevant today and she regularly appears on many of our St. Thomas English book lists each semester.

If you are enthralled watching Cristopher Nolan's film The Odyssey this July and are looking for another great classic work from Homer, consider taking our fall ENGL/CLAS 220 The Classical Tradition course this upcoming fall! Not only will you read Homer's Iliad, but you'll also get to read and discuss other great tales, such as The Oresteia by Aeschylus and Bacchae and other plays by Euripides.

Let's face it--we live in a world of conspiracy theories spread by social media, tabloid magazines, and a number of TV shows (think X-Files). The objective of the course is neither to promote nor debunk any particular theory, but to examine the role that conspiracy theories play as modern mythologies, dramatizing our fears and anxieties, and (strangely enough) our enduring (and possibly naïve) hope that things will one day get better. This course satisfies the core Integrations in the Humanities requirement.

Explore 19th-century gaming by studying popular Victorian games, their role in shaping the period’s literature, and our adaptations of Victorian culture in contemporary games such as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and Marrying Mr. Darcy. Study (and play) literature-based role-playing, parlor, board, and video games, among others. You’ll also get to create a Victorian game using Twine.
