ENGL 322 Writing Fiction is an intermediate course that explores traditional and innovative patterns of fiction writing, with an emphasis on experimentation with a variety of techniques and development of individual voice. This course will include critique sessions, readings to broaden possibilities of form and subject, and individual instruction. Prerequisite: ENGL 255 or permission of instructor.

In what ways are we telling stories in our writing--stories of RESEARCH, stories that show how we INTERPRET what we see and experience, stories that move people to THINK AND ACT differently? This course is open to anyone who sees writing as critical to their futures.

Today we celebrate the birthday of Richard Wright, who did much to highlight the African American condition of racial discrimination and violence in the later 19th century to mid-20th century. Best known for his novel NATIVE SON and his memoir BLACK BOY, Wright was a prolific writer of essays and other works. He had great influence on Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin. He spent the last part of his life in abroad and became a French citizen in 1947.

We celebrate the September 3rd birthday of Sarah Orne Jewett, who was best known for her local color/regional stories centered around Maine. Her novella THE COUNTRY OF POINTED FIRS is perhaps her best known work, though she is well regarded for her many short stories, including "The White Heron." Willa Cather admired Jewett's work and dedicated her own Nebraska-centered novel O PIONEERS! to Jewett.

Explore 19th-century gaming by studying popular Victorian games, their role in shaping the period’s literature (think Wuthering Heights), and our adaptations of Victorian culture in contemporary video games such as Assassin’s Creed Syndicate and the card game, Marrying Mr. Darcy. Study (and play!) literature-based role-playing, parlor, board, and video games, among others. You’ll also get to create a Victorian game using Twine, a simple software tool for telling interactive, non-linear stories.

Just a few seats remaining in our Paranoid: Conspiracies in literature course! We live in a world of conspiracy theories spread by social media, tabloid magazines, and an endless number of TV shows. The objective of the course is neither to promote nor debunk any particular theory, but to examine the role that conspiracy theories play as modern mythologies, dramatizing our fears and anxieties, and (strangely enough) our enduring (and possibly naïve) hope that things will one day get better.
