Last week, Professor Acton and Professor Holte brought seven students from the APEX program to Washington D.C. for the AAAS - The American Association for the Advancement of Science S-STEM Conference. Odin Lee '26, a graduate student in our M.S. in Data Science program, came to St. Thomas engineering for the quality and convenience. "When I was looking for a master's programs in Data Science, St. Thomas was one of the few in the state that allowed me to continue my education without needing to leave the Twin Cities," he explains. "On top of that convenience, St. Thomas offers a very high caliber of learning as well as having an extremely well-connected community throughout the state and Midwest."

Graduating from another school with his B.S. in Data Science, he wanted to continue his studies and dive deeper into the material. "The main benefit I have gotten from this program is a massive increase in my overall confidence."

During his first semester, Odin faced a difficult period in his personal life while navigating the challenges of a demanding graduate program. Rather than allowing those challenges to define his experience, he continued showing up to class, asking questions, and working through difficult material. By the end of the semester, he had earned A’s in both of his courses and completed a Fantasy Football Analysis Database for his final project of his favorite class - Machine Learning with Professor Kazemzadeh.

Odin tells us one of the best parts of being a graduate student in the College of Engineering is how connected our professors and instructors are with the data industry. "This allows each class to be taught by someone with experience using the skills they are using in real-world situations," Odin remarked. "It is also extremely useful for asking questions and getting their advice when looking for jobs."

Odin's advice for incoming graduate students is to take advantage of our great faculty and get involved with our clubs on campus. "I wanted to meet more people outside of my degree, so I decided to join the school's Ultimate Frisbee Club," he tells us. "This was something I did not think I would be able to do coming into graduate school, but it was incredibly worth it. I got to truly feel like a part of the university and met some guys who have now become good friends of mine. "

Sumaya Dhimbil '28, Co-President of our St. Thomas NSBE chapter, shares her experience as a student in the College of Engineering.

"My experience in electrical engineering has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to grow academically while connecting with an amazing community of students, mentors, and faculty," Sumaya shares. "As a first-generation college student and the first engineer in my family, the College of Engineering has given me countless opportunities, from studying abroad to peer mentoring, SCALE, DSAB, and serving as an Engineering Student Ambassador. Pursuing electrical engineering alongside physics and a minor in mathematics has challenged me to think across disciplines and has helped shape the engineer I aspire to be."

Melinda Mattox, Director of Security Operations at the University of St. Thomas and Instructor for our Graduate Programs of Software, joins CBS News to talk about the rise in AI-assisted cyber-attacks.

Cyber security attacks can come in many forms. The most common attack at St. Thomas is phishing attacks, often sent via email. AI agents are gaining skills of deception. "While everyone is at risk, these agents can really hone-in and make these attacks feel much more personal," Mattox explains to viewers.

Mattox advises people to protect themselves by using strong and unique passwords, multi-factor authentication (MFA) and taking training on how to protect yourself from phishing and other forms of cyber-attacks.

Landon Deneen '27, is a track & field student athlete, studying mechanical engineering and philosophy. We asked him a few questions on why he chose engineering and how he manages to balance a heavy courseload with his sports and internships.

"I chose mechanical engineering because it's a versatile degree that teaches critical thinking and will allow me to pursue all sorts of opportunities, from designing spacecraft to selling technical equipment or becoming an entrepreneur, " Landon explains. "So many people who have made an impact on the world started their careers studying engineering."

His favorite memory as an engineering student is competing in the "machine design" class competition, where student teams race to complete a task using a robot they designed and built. "Things are bound to go wrong during the competition and working as a team to troubleshoot and make our machine work in a high-pressure situation is exhilarating."

Landon has been running organized track & field since the 5th grade, and backyard track and field as long as he can remember. "Track and field is a sport where pushing yourself to the limit in practice is the only way to bring out your best performances in competition," he tells us. "My proudest moments are when the workouts get tough and my teammates and I bring out the best within each other."

He balances his studies and his training by focusing on the present moment. "Thinking about an assignment while doing a workout means that neither will get done well. I'm not perfect at mental compartmentalization, but I'm always trying to improve!"

We're proud of Landon and his accomplishments in the classroom, in his industry, and on the track!

A recent poll from CNN reports 90% of Americans are concerned, rather than excited, about the idea of AI surpassing human intelligence. Professor Manjeet Rege joins KARE 11 to discuss the concerns and risks of these rapidly developing AI models and agents. He also touches on how workers can protect their jobs from AI-takeovers.

Dr. Rege does not believe we are anywhere close to a robotic take-over. His advice is to focus on the guardrails we need now, to protect from the risks of AI today. He calls for internal audits from the major companies who develop the frontier AI models, and to share the information on AI safety testing.
