Celebrating the global impact of our MPH community! After completing her MPH practicum and co-authoring AOFOG’s Regional Call to Action to Eliminate Violence Against Women, MPH student Alyssa Olson was invited back to Chulalongkorn University’s School of Global Health in Bangkok, Thailand. Working in collaboration with MPH alumna Connie Vang, who currently lives in Bangkok, Alyssa is supporting a Photovoice study on IPV among university students.

Alyssa recently traveled to Bangkok to present for the WHO’s International Day to End Violence Against Women.

We are so proud of their commitment to advancing women’s health and preventing violence worldwide.

We’re excited to celebrate MPH student Artam Enayat, who presented his research at the APHA 2025 Conference in October.

Artam’s presentation, “Navigating Climate Change and Violence Against Women and Girls: Community Response Strategies in Kilifi, Kenya,” examined how climate-related stresses can heighten risks for violence against women and girls and highlighted multi-level community response strategies.

He shared that the best part of APHA was connecting with professionals passionate about gender and climate justice, receiving feedback that strengthened the community and policy relevance of his work.

Artam added, “I would like to sincerely thank Dr. Allen (MPH Director and Associate Professor) and Dr. Munala (U of MN research partner and former MPH faculty member) for their unwavering support and guidance throughout this research, and for giving me the opportunity to present it at the nationwide APHA 2025 conference. This achievement would not have been possible without their mentorship and encouragement.”

We are so proud of Artam’s dedication to community-centered research and global health equity!

At St. Kate’s Public Health, our faculty are intentional in inviting students and alum into their research. In the newly released study “Climate Change and Health: Impacts Across Social Determinants in Kenyan Agrarian Communities,” MPH Professor Dr. Elizabeth Allen partnered with MPH students Cristhy Quito and Artam Enayat, along with MPH alum Andrew J. Frederick.

This work was carried out in collaboration with LVCT Health, the University of Minnesota, the County Government of Kilifi Gender Office, and, most importantly, community members from Ganze and Magarini sub-counties.

The study amplifies the lived realities of adolescent girls navigating climate-driven droughts, floods, and food insecurity. It highlights how disrupted education, gender-based violence, and mental health challenges compound these struggles. Most importantly, it shows the resilience and local wisdom of communities as they create solutions to support and protect girls so they can thrive.

Recommendations from Dr for your time at your MPH practicum site. Try new things: my first time on a motorcycle in the field! Try new foods: my first time eating uchungu raw (it is so bitter, like the worst medicine, and yet so tasty cooked with coconut milk!). Make new friends! Visit old friends. Participate. Get your hands dirty! Say YES! Put your self in a position to talk to as many people as possible. Don’t be afraid to try! Learn new words, new ideas, and engage in meaningful exchanges. Listen! Learn. Share. Ask questions. Be curious. Enjoy. Take a break. Your projects and work will be stronger for a visit to a beach, take a few days to rest, or do an activity that changes your perspective. If someone invites you to do something, embrace that opportunity. You won’t be sorry.

Dr. is able to visit her Tanzanian Ph.D. Dissertation field site after 20 years. She escorted two MPH students to their practicum site in Tanzania and is extending her trip to visit her Tanzanian family and friends. Her second day here and she is already attending the first day of a wedding — sorting rice, cooking mandazi, and dancing. It’s just like the old days. There’s been a lot of reminiscing, meeting the children of the children she played with 20 years ago, and getting all the life updates. The most important observation is that life continues to be difficult in this rural coastal village but it continues. It’s just a few days but reconnecting is always recommended. ❤️
