Upcoming Events in September!

Monthly Luncheon - September 11th

The Minnesota FBA Chapter hosts a month luncheon at the Minneapolis Club. Each month features a different speaker, and there is always a brief social/networking session prior to the lunch and presentation. This month Professor Carol Chomsky from the University of Minnesota Law School will speak on the 1862 Dakota War Trials. As a student member of the FBA, the Mitchell Hamline chapter will cover the cost of your attendance. If you would like to attend, please send me your full name and whether you prefer a meat or vegetarian option. Also, I try to attend most of these so you have a friendly face to help with introductions.

For future planning purposes, the remaining luncheons will take place on October 10th, November 8th, December 12th, January 10th, February 14th, March 14th, April 11th and May 9th.

CLE - "Getting Gritty - Using Grit and Growth Mindset to Encourage, Support and Build Diversity Within Your Legal Practice" - September 20th (3:30 - 5:00 at Robins Kaplan)

Explore the science of Grit and Growth Mindset. Through interactive examples and table discussions, learn how certain characteristics play an important role in career growth. And more importantly, learn how to develop and foster those characteristics in yourself and others to promote diversity within your practice.

The program and group discussions will be led and facilitated by Sarah Rohne, Employer Relations Director, Career Center Associate Director at the Minnesota Law School. She serves on the Commission on Women in the Profession that developed the Grit Project to educate women lawyers about the science behind grit and growth mindset.

This CLE is sponsored by the FBA-Minnesota Chapter's Diversity Committee and Minnesota Women Lawyers and is being provided at no cost.

Volunteer Opportunity - Judge Edward J. Devitt and Practical Justice – September 22nd

On Friday, September 22, Mitchell Hamline and the new MHSL History Center will be putting on a half-day program on the legacy of federal judge Edward J. Devitt, who was an adjunct here, who hired mostly Mitchell clerks in his later years, and who is honored by a Devitt scholarship and Devitt professorship (held by Professor Failinger.) Professor Failinger needs 3-5 student volunteers who would be willing to check in lawyers and judges coming for this CLE, and make sure that they have signed the relevant Continuing Judicial Education/Continuing Legal Education signup forms at the auditorium, point them to the restroom, etc. The program runs from 1-5 in the auditorium followed by a reception in the Conservatory.

There are two shifts:

- 12:15-1:30 (3 Students)

- 1:30-4:30 (1-2 Students)

There will be over 180 attendees, so you’d have plenty of opportunity to meet lots of judges and lawyers, most of whom are alums. If you are interested, please contact Professor Failinger at [email protected].

Mentorship Program – Coming Soon!

Last year the Minnesota Chapter of the FBA was invited to participate in a pilot mentorship program, which was a great success. We had several judges and many experienced attorneys participate as mentors. The program matched students with a professional FBA member in their geographic area. We are excited to continue to expand this program this year and will be in touch with additional information as soon as it is available.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or if there is anything in particular you would like to see from our student chapter.
