Thomas is an educational program designed to give men and women the opportunity to become United States Air Force officers while completing a degree. The AFROTC is designed to prepare students to assume positions of increasing responsibility and leadership in today's modern, high-technology Air Force. Thomas has an extensive military tradition which began in 1903 with the formation of two military

training companies on the campus. In 1916, St. Thomas was one of the first six colleges selected nationwide to establish a ROTC program. In 1948 AFROTC was established here and the first Air Force officer was commissioned in 1950. Since then, academic success of our AFROTC students has been outstanding. Many AFROTC students have become accomplished leaders in their career fields and their communities.

During Joint Training Weekend (JTW), cadets practiced small unit tactics, land navigation, and honed leadership skills while participating in a large-scale practice operation. Cadets used paintball guns to destroy targets while evading and engaging with opposing cadet forces. On day 2 of JTW they experienced a full day of simulated Field Training (FT), enduring a long day filled with Group Leadership Projects (GLPs), marching, and learning skills to succeed at FT. Cadets then returned the very next day for LLAB 10 where they completed a GLP which saw them going around campus to obtain intelligence from informants to complete an objective.

LLAB 4 had cadets looking sharp during Open Ranks Inspections (ORI) as cadre made their evaluations. Cadets also practiced marching skills and door entry procedures. In physical training (PT), Basic Cadet Leaders (BCLs) completed the Warrior Fitness Challenge, a high intensity fitness test that they will take down at Field Training this summer.

On February 18, Detachment 410 hosted its annual Open House to give prospective cadets insight into AFROTC and college life. Prospective cadets heard speeches from cadre and cadets on their experiences. They also attempted a Group Leadership Project (GLP) where they used leadership and followership skills to traverse a “minefield.” Info tables highlighting Det 410 clubs and activities allowed prospective cadets to hear from current cadets about programs and career opportunities in AFROTC and the Air and Space Force.

Christmas came early for cadets at DET 410.

‘Twas the morning of the PFA, when all through the field house,
Not a cadet showed their nerves, not even the PT-loving POC powerhouse;
The clock by the start line was placed with great care,
In hopes that swift cadets soon would be there;

Cadets proved themselves at this Fall’s Physical Fitness Assessment, coming prepared after months of training and demonstrating their motivation to become the Fittest Detachment in the Nation.

After a tough morning of pushing to the max, cadets received a surprise from the one and only. Christmas came early, and Santa brought gifts! Six cadets learned their first base assignments where they will be headed after commissioning in just a few short months. What a fantastic way to end the week and kick off the holiday season!

This past Veterans Day, cadets from DET 410 honored our nation’s prisoners of war and those missing in action during our annual 24-hour POW/MIA Vigil.

Cadets opened the vigil by raising the American and POW/MIA flags and assembling the battlefield cross, a powerful symbol of sacrifice and remembrance. For the full 24 hours, cadets stood watch and marched in silent tribute, reflecting on the courage of those who never returned home.
