Concordia University, St. Paul Department of English and Modern Languages News and information about the students and faculty in the Department of English and Modern Language We offer a minor in writing as well as a minor in Spanish.

The Department of English and Modern Languages offers a degree in English with four emphasis areas from which to choose: literature, creative writing, professional writing, and journalism. We also offer a degree in Comm Arts/Lit with secondary licensure. This degree prepares students to teach English and related fields in public schools. Our department also oversees Concordia-St. Paul's Writing Ce

nter as well as Concordia's student newspaper, "The Sword." Our classes are small, and students get to know each other and the faculty members very well. We require internships for all of our majors; these internships help to prepare students to succeed in finding employment after graduating.

The Department of English and Modern Languages is excited to announce that we will roll out a new Master of Fine Arts in creative writing next fall, offering students the opportunity to develop the skills of aspiring fiction and creative non-fiction writers.

The two-year, 36-credit, completely online program consists of five different components: workshop courses, literature courses, craft courses, a literary research course, and a supervised thesis. After completing this program, students will have achieved a level of sophistication in their writing that will allow them to pursue a number of career options, including a published novelist, short story writer, poet, or creative nonfiction writer. However, other career options are also available.

“This MFA program will give the English and modern languages department an opportunity to work with students from around the world,” Department of English and modern languages faculty member Matt Ryan said. “Our goal for this program is simple: Teach students to become published authors. When this happens, this will raise our visibility in the arts community.”

Mainhia Moua recently got accepted to join a retreat for writing, specifically targeted towards Hmong women; it is called the Hmong Women Write Now Retreat. It provides an opportunity for Hmong women to tell their stories through writing, and involves a lot of interactive workshops, networking, and the possibility of getting work published in a special anthology to celebrate the voices of Hmong women and girls. This year, Kao Kalia Yang will be one of the mentors.

There was a two-step application process, and Mainhia passed both rounds and was accepted to join the retreat. The retreat will take place in two weeks, but after that, they will meet once every month from December to February to do Writing Workshops. They will also be working hard in trying to improve our writing during those months. If I all goes well, Mainhia may have the chance to publish her work in a new anthology.

There are no official advertisements for this retreat except for a Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/1815552502013745/. You can find more details about the event under the "About" button.
