Gusties Earn Honors at Regional Jerry Heuer Team Contest

On November 15, three student teams represented Gustavus at the Jerry Heuer Team Contest, a prestigious regional mathematics competition. Competing against a field of 63 teams, our students demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills during the three-hour event.

The contest featured ten challenging problems, requiring collaboration and ingenuity. All three of our participating teams delivered strong performances, solving multiple problems for full credit.

Team Results:
* Gaussties (Copeland S. and Hexa Z.) scored 48/100, securing 33rd place overall and earning an Honorable Mention.
* The Floor Function (Brian L., Philip B., and Joseph M.) finished with a strong score of 44/100.
* Orchestra Concert Later (Marta L. and Jasper S.) posted a solid score of 38/100.

Gustavus faculty members Dr. Jeff Ford and Dr. Jacob Siehler supervised the local participation. "This was an excellent performance from all three teams," said Dr Siehler. "While not quite the Putnam in terms of difficulty, these problems are very challenging. To see every team solve multiple problems with full credit is a testament to their hard work."

Please congratulate these students on their performance.

Earlier this semester, Computer Science major Youdahe Asfaw had the opportunity to attend the Johns Hopkins University Hackathon, one of the most selective hackathons in the country with only about 35% of applicants accepted.

"During the hackathon, my team and I built Fillai, a voice-powered, AI-driven form filler designed for visually impaired users. Our project allows someone to upload any form — PDF, scan, or image and have the fields automatically detected with AI and OCR. Instead of typing or clicking, the user is guided by voice prompts and responds naturally with speech, and the app completes the form in real time. It was an incredible experience to use technology to solve a real-world accessibility challenge, and I left the hackathon energized by the potential impact of what we built."
