The Evan Anderson Forum

The Evan Anderson Forum The Evan Anderson Forum is the home of the Gustavus Adolphus College Forensics Team

The Evan Anderson Forum is a comprehensive, co-curricular forensics program that balances competition in individual events and debate with community service and scholarly activities. Firmly grounded within the liberal arts tradition, we promote the development of outstanding public speaking, critical thinking, oral advocacy and composition skills through ethical intercollegiate competition in spee

ch and debate events as well as through the practical application of forensics-related concepts on campus and throughout the community. The Forum seeks to reimagine the role and purpose of speech and debate programs by establishing itself as a model campus and community resource that facilitates debate and deliberation on matters of public concern. It seeks to leverage the expertise of its members to foster community dialog, promote ethical forms of conflict resolution, and encourage civility and tolerance in political debate and public moral argument. Finally, the Forum promotes both the scholarly study of intercollegiate speech and debate as well as forensics-related community service.

Gustavus debate underwent an exciting growth spurt today! Competing in the second PLUM tournament at Bethany Lutheran College, this time we had 3 teams competing. GAC continued its trend of novice debaters succeeding as Grant and Callie took home 4th and 2nd place in speaker awards, respectively, and Callie and Amanda broke to the Bronze Round! With Fall Break weekend off to a great start, tomorrow we compete at the Larry Schnoor invitational for IEs. Expect more updates this weekend!

So proud of these two! Thomas Sullivan was top speaker and Grant Longman was third place. What's more, they were undefeated and won the whole tournament! Not bad for their first time out 🙂 I hope others on the squad will join them at the next Plum on Friday, October 13th. I promise it will be fun and the debates were very high quality.

On a related note, one team member received a very special honor last night! In addition to her competitive success, MJ was named a recipient of PKD's All-American Award! This award goes beyond recognizing trophies earned and also acknowledges scholarship, service, and advocacy. Only 10 students are named All-Americans at each national convention, making it a very rare achievement. MJ has been a tremendous leader on and off the team, and could not be more deserving of this honor. We are very proud to have her as a part of this team!

After four days of competition, the Pi Kappa Delta national tournament has come to a close, and with it, the Gustie forensics season. Last night, the team attended the banquet and partook in a beautiful celebration of all aspects of forensics. The evening was not without competitive success, and two Gusties took home awards for their performances. In particular:

MJ was a Top Legislator in Student Congress and took home Excellence awards in both Student Congress and Extemporaneous Speaking!

Thomas earned an Excellence award in Impromptu!

It is difficult to capture the atmosphere of this year's biennial convention in words, but suffice it to say that the entire team is feeling incredibly grateful to be part of this community. The season may be over, but this weekend all were reminded that using your voice does not stop outside the round. Gusties will shine!
