The geography department is committed to helping students understand and engage the world around them from a spatial perspective through teaching, research and service. Geography is a problem-solving discipline whose programs and resources provide students with both technical skills and a liberal arts perspective to prepare them for life-long careers. The geography department offerings combine a s

trong background in the academic tradition of geography with applied fields such as

regional development and planning
environmental sustainability
meteorology and climatology
tourism development and travel marketing
geographic information systems (GIS)
cartography
remote sensing and digital image processing

In 2006, the United Nation's World Tourism Organization (WTO) certified the Department's Tourism education program (BS degree Tourism Concentration), which conforms with and meets the international standards criteria of the WTO. The department's Digital Geography Lab (DGL) is regarded as one of the best academic geography-based computer labs in the country. This unique facility is dedicated to supporting and fostering undergraduate and graduate geo-spatial computing education and research. The DGL supports the Department's extensive and diverse curriculum with specialized software and hardware. The DGL facilitates collaboration within the department, and is a focal point for faculty, undergraduate and graduate research. The geography department is located on North Campus, Meier Hall 326.

Held annually, Earth Days 2024 is where SSU and the broader Salem State Community can unify to achieve a better understanding of how we can all contribute to slowing the advance of climate change and managing the impacts that are already occurring through measures focused on resiliency.

In conjunction with the North Shore Alliance and the Center for Economic Development & Sustainability (CEDS), we would like to share information on an exciting research project we are working on. The Future of Work: Employment Retention will gather vital data on what students seek post-graduation regarding career opportunities: job type and desired industry, plus what communities they would like to live and work in and challenges that may prevent them from reaching their goals.

Please circulate the survey below, the more respondents we get, the better we can assist students post-graduation.

We are trying to get students from each of the 10 institutions of higher education north of Boston to respond.

This is a Future of Work study that is exploring how we can provide employment to our graduates and keep the talent on the North Shore.

Professor Lorri Krebs (geography and sustainability) was interviewed by The Boston Globe about 'extreme tourism' as many are now calling the quest for exploring out of reach places for the piece “Skiing in Antarctica. Dinner with the pope. Illegal border crossings? Extreme adventure tourism is hitting new heights.” Professor Krebs was also interviewed by The Seattle Times about the concerns surrounding adventure tourism for the piece “Deep-sea exploration, mountain climbing, space travel: Who pays when things go wrong?” The sustainability of these types of tourism endeavors are front and center in conversations due to the recent Titan submersible tragedy.

The drive for wealthy and competitive travelers to try and reach the edge of space, or the bottom of the ocean, has grown in popularity.
