Emerging Scholars Program (Salem State University)

Emerging Scholars Program (Salem State University) The Emerging Scholars Program connects first-year students with mentors to provide support in adjusting to both the academic & social life at Salem State.

EMERGING SCHOLARS PROGRAM

This exclusive program offers invited first-year students additional resources for adjusting to the academic and social life at Salem State University. Being selected to participate in the Emerging Scholars Program is a tremendous honor and we highly encourage you to take advantage of this worthwhile opportunity! Emerging Scholars are paired with Success Coach who will m

eet with them on a regular basis throughout the semester to provide support and guidance. In addition, upper-class Program Coordinators coordinate activities for all Emerging Scholars to participate in. Some activities relate to achieving academic success and others are social in nature. Students who successfully complete the program are inducted into Alpha Omega Psi; a local honor society recognizing first year success. Requirements for induction will be reviewed with participants at the start of fall semester. STUDENT SUPPORT

Your coach will serve as an informational resource all year long, providing guidance and support as you navigate your first year of college. In addition to meeting with your coach you will receive invitations to participate in interactive workshops, team meetings and campus activities throughout the year. Our programs provide opportunities for emerging scholars to meet and develop life-long friendships in a supportive environment; all while helping you achieve first year success. CONTACT INFORMATION

The Emerging Scholars Program is housed in the First Year Experience Office. Email us at [email protected] or give us a call at 978.542.2618.

"I had to understand my needs. I had to know when I needed to study, I had to know when I needed to hang out with friends, I needed to know when to get some fresh air and alone time. I think understanding your needs and trusting yourself, and your ability plays a big role in how well you're doing."

Transition to Second Year - A student panel on successfully transitioning from your first to second year of college.

“I use my time wisely now as a sophomore. I feel like I do my work on time, when I used to do it at the last minute, which was not good. Honestly, I use the library a lot. I have a four hour gap between classes and I try to do my work there. That is one of the main academic differences I really had."

Transition to Second Year - A student panel on successfully transitioning from your first to second year of college.

One of the big things was finding a better balance. I got way more organized, finding time for not only myself but my schoolwork. I have also been going to the library a lot this year. This year I found I cannot study effectively when I'm in my room.
Making that change of going to the library first definitely improved a lot."

"l've found that the more I grow my Interest the more that l've spent time in the places that matter to me, the more I feel i've been there forever. It's really about finding where I want to be connected that matters."
