April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and on one Wednesday every April, there is a Denim Day - an event originally created by Peace Over Violence 18 years ago in protest over an Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a r**e conviction. In this court ruling it had been decided that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her ra**st remove her jeans, and that this speculation was evidence of consent. On Denim Day, wearing jeans has become a visible means of protest against the misconceptions of sexual assault.

Come out to learn more and help spread awareness about sexual violence awareness at the CSUMB Denim Day Fair event next Wednesday! The event will take place at the Student Center in the East Lounge on April 26th at 7pm. We hope to see you there!

to sculptor Selma Burke, born in 1900. Burke was interested in art from a young age and her parents supported it as long as she also learned a marketable skill. So, she earned a nursing degree and moved to New York City in 1924 to work as a nurse. In her free time, Burke sculpted. She received a grant in 1935 and another in 1936 that allowed her to study full time in Europe. She earned a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University in 1941. Five years later she founded the Selma Burke Art School in New York City and then opened the Selma Burke Art Center in Pittsburgh. While known for many of her pieces, Burke is best known for the portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This piece was the model used for his image on the dime.
