Happy Labor Day! today we acknowledge and celebrate the ever-evolving workers movement in America and pay homage to the brave individuals who have fought and continue to fight for the rights of workers.
Labor Day began as a movement in 1882 in New York City where workers cam together to walk the streets, advocate, conglomerate, and celebrate the work that individuals do to support the lives of Americans.
The rights of working people everywhere is still an issue that needs to be heavily advocated for, and Labor Day provides an opportunity for all to look back on the wins earned by individuals looking to advocate for the improvement of unjust treatment within the workplace.
Understanding the roots of the holiday, and how the history shapes how discrimination, environmental health issues, overworking, and conflicts within the workplace have been addressed, can help us move forward and continue to fight for individuals working everywhere.
Happy Labor Day to all, and to SU students, enjoy the beautiful day and long weekend off from classes!

We want to give a massive shoutout to Niall Sheehan and Briana Spradlin, who both presented at the SU Summer Student Research Showcase. Both worked incredibly hard over the summer to collect, cumulate, and present their research and the ENVR department couldn't be prouder of them.
Creative Writing and Environmental Studies major Niall Sheehan spent his time collecting data on the demographics of post college life from SU ENVR students. Mapping 303 Alumni, Niall was able to draw connections between green job markets in order to create better connections between current and past ENVR students. This project was helped by ENVR professor Dr. Shane Hall. Great job Niall!
Coastal Engineering major Briana Spradlin with collaboration from Dr.Hall presented research on coastline resilience practices and allocation of resources along the Maryland Eastern Shore. Her research goes over the impacts of sea level rise on private landowners and how cost, permitting, and policy play into the difficulties of combatting saltwater intrusion, erosion, and other issues that stem from Sea level rise. Awesome stuff Briana!
We are incredibly proud of students making the effort to engross themselves within the different areas of environmental research, the change starts here!

Welcome Back to Salisbury University from the Environment Studies Department! This fall semester we are incredibly excited to welcome back returning students and greet new students entering into the field. This year is one of excitement, commitment, and community; we are looking forward to seeing everybody. Dr. Daniel J. Packey, Adjunct Professor of Economics, Salisbury University, offers a clear, engaging overview of the economic and sustainability challenges surrounding rare earth elements. Dr. Dan Packey is the former Head of Minerals and Energy Economics at Curtin University. The talk explains what rare earths are, why they’re vital to technologies like electric vehicles and wind turbines, and how their global supply chains reflect strategic, environmental, and market pressures.

The SU Environmental Studies seniors went kayaking under the full Flower Moon at the Nanticoke River Center. They lunched the kayaks during sunset, and kayaked the 2.5 mile loop through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Such a great way to start off the month of their graduation!! 👩🏻‍🎓👨🏾‍🎓

The native pollinator garden was planted around the ENVR house! 🦋🐝🐞🪱 The native plant species support native pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
What is pollination?
Pollination is the process of moving pollen from one
flower to another of the same species, which produces
fertile seeds. Almost all flowering plants need to be
pollinated. Some plants are pollinated by wind or water,
and some are even self-pollinating. However, most
flowering plants depend on bees, butterflies, and other animals for pollination.
