This year, SLCC’s student-led speech and debate team competed in the Great Salt Lake Invitational debate tournament at the University of Utah. Different schools from 7 different states competed in the combined speech and debate tournament. SLCC’s debate team won the 3rd place sweepstakes award, which is a recognition of the success of both competing teams from SLCC. In addition, Zachary Petersen – won 9th place Speaker Award in the NPDA Parli tournament, Emily Tecuanhuehue / Cicero Smith – Won 4th place in the Duo Interpretation event and Cicero also placed 6th in dramatic interpretation. Alexa Nava also competed in informative speaking, Zachary Petersen in extemporaneous speaking, Angie Maes in informative and persuasive speaking, Kamil Hansen in informative and impromptu, and Tristan Hammack in poetry and communication analysis. Anne Canavan is the faculty advisor/coach for the team, and Chris Blankenship volunteered his time as a coach and judge for the tournament. Dean Roderic Land has also kindly supported the team in their efforts. The team’s next tournament will be a virtual event hosted by the College of Southern Idaho in late March.

Anyone interested in joining the speech and debate team should visit https://slcc.campusgroups.com/debate/home/ for a list of meeting times. All are welcome, regardless of prior experience!
