Recent NPR reporting highlights the devastating toll silicosis is taking on quartz countertop workers and their families across the U.S. As more cases emerge nationwide, experts are raising concerns about the dangers of silica dust exposure in countertop fabrication.

Dr. Kurt Hegmann, RMCOEH center director, was quoted in the article saying, “This is the worst situation I’ve seen affecting a workforce in my 35 years.”

As cases continue to emerge nationwide, the need for stronger worker protections and silica exposure prevention is gaining more attention.

Congratulations to our newest RMCOEH graduates! 🎓✨

This year, we are proud to celebrate 27 outstanding trainees as they take the next step in careers dedicated to occupational and environmental health. Among this incredible group are two physicians completing their occupational medicine residency training, five PhD graduates, and 20 master’s students. Their achievements reflect the hard work, passion, and commitment that define the RMCOEH community.

After more than 20 years leading RMCOEH’s Occupational Medicine program, Eric Wood, MD, is stepping down, but not stepping away.

Now named professor emeritus, Dr. Wood will continue mentoring residents, treating patients, and contributing to the work he calls “meaningful” every day.

His legacy lives on through the generations of physicians he’s trained and the countless workers whose lives they protect.

The symposium provided a platform for sharing cutting-edge research and fostering collaboration among emerging scholars in the field.
