After six weeks in Korea studying human rights and resources, University of Utah Honors College students traveled to Mongolia for an immersive field experience with the International Development of Mongolia class.

Over 11 days, students crossed the Mongolian steppe, exploring Terelj, Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, the Flaming Cliffs of Bayanzag, the Gobi sand dunes, and the ancient capital of Kharkhorin. Along the way, they rode horses and camels, stayed in traditional gers, camped under the stars, and experienced life with nomadic families.

The journey connected Mongolia's history, culture, environment, and development challenges, culminating in Ulaanbaatar with a meeting with World Vision Mongolia.

The Honors College is inviting Honors students to submit original artwork for a chance to have your work featured on the cover of the 2027 Graduation Ceremony program!

🏆 Selected artist receives $500

After reading and commenting on "The Embodied Self" by somatic psychotherapist Peter Levine, students in The Artfully Extended MInd artfully extended their embodied selves during Sifu Toni Lock's Qigong workshop in the Chapel Glen Ravine. It was a perfect day and beautiful way to study and practice in the great outdoors!

The expressive students in The Artfully Extended Mind gave shape to silence and birth to sounds -- in the Vocal Improvisation workshop led by the Argentine singer, María Correa. Later they divided into quartets and spontaneously composed an interactive tapestry of voices and beats. All in the furtherance of embodied creativity. The room is still ringing!

This summer, students in the University of Utah Honors College course 7 Cities: Civil Society in Korea continued their journey across South Korea, including the DMZ, where they explored one of the world's most heavily fortified borders and discussed the possibilities and challenges of peace, diplomacy, and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula. From there, they wandered through Incheon Chinatown, learning how one of Korea's earliest international communities helped shape the country's modern identity while sampling local favorites and experiencing the neighborhood's vibrant culture.

The adventure continued to Jeonju and the peaceful grounds of Naesosa Temple, where conversations about the Donghak Rebellion brought to life the stories of ordinary people who challenged injustice and inspired generations of social change. Along the way, students enjoyed Jeonju's famous cuisine and discovered why the city is celebrated as one of Korea's great food capitals.

In Gwangju, students explored the legacy of the Gwangju Uprising, reflecting on the courage of citizens who fought for democracy and the enduring impact of their sacrifices. A walk through the tranquil Damyang Bamboo Forest offered a chance to slow down and reflect before gathering around the table to share one of the region's signature dishes, tteokgalbi.

As if students weren't already bowled over enough by the "scrappy and adventurous" Footpath Theater Company's workshop in The Artfully Extended Mind course, they knocked down a pyramid of paper cups at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. This was just one moment of many that students improvised for a "bank of moments" that could be potentially used in a theater piece about the Great Salt Lake. Students collaborated and extended their creative minds brilliantly!

We all know that honors students love to dig into their class discussions, but there's just something about the green in the ravine that freshens and enlivens their conversations. Here they are in the Chapel Glen Ravine discussing "thinking with movement and gesture" in the The Artfully Extended Mind course, as they rooted in the earth and extended their imaginations to the tops of the trees!
