Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month was established through congressional action beginning in 1978 and expanded to a month-long observance in 1992. It marks key moments in AAPI history, including early immigration and the contributions of Chinese laborers to the transcontinental railroad. The development of this observance shows how civic engagement and legislative processes influence national narratives and recognition. Reflecting critically on this history allows for a more grounded understanding of exclusion, resilience, and representation within U.S. history, aligning with the Honors College’s commitment to inquiry and inclusive learning.

Each year, the Honors College invites students to submit their artwork to serve as the cover art for the Honors College Degree Recognition Celebration. This year, Honors has selected Nandhini Ramanathan’s piece Uncharted to reflect the character and outlook of this year’s graduates. Nandhini describes the figure’s place at the edge of a precipice: “The piece is meant to capture what it feels like to stand at the edge of something enormous, the way graduation does,” she said. “The idea behind it was that no matter how much we collaborate, how many teams we’re part of, or how many people support us along the way, self-discovery is ultimately something you do alone. Growth and change and real reflection start from within. The figure isn’t lost though, they’re present, they’re looking outward, and the world in front of them is enormous and full of possibility.”

Earth Day was first observed in 1970 as a nationwide response to growing environmental concerns, including pollution and the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Organized through widespread civic engagement, it led to the creation of the EPA and key environmental legislation. This history underscores the impact of sustained public action and the importance of critically examining how environmental awareness takes shape. Reflecting on Earth Day aligns with the Honors College’s commitment to learning, civic responsibility, and understanding the structural forces that shape environmental policy.
